I thought that FCC applications had to be made public. Wouldn't a 3G iPhone application be public by now?
A company submitting a device to the FCC can request that their application be kept confidential until a particular date. This prevents product details from being leaked prematurely.

Apple has consistently used the confidentiality provisions

IIRC, the iPhone was announced before it was even submitted to the FCC.

I thought they already put in the FCC application for the 3G version?
There would have been a tech-press-orgy if that had occurred. If I remember right, Steve Jobs announced the original iPhone in January of 2007 and it was not released till June of 2007. My standing prediction is that we will most likely see a 3G iPhone "on the street" by June 2009.

I wonder if the number of months before the release of the 3G iPhone will be the number needed to coincide with the first contract explorations of current iPhone owners.

And why is AT&T wasting money on "upgrades" to EDGE? EDGE is a dead-end technology. Bring on more 3G service!
