[Connectivity] NYC 10027 - What's going on here?

This isn't a total outage issue, but we're on the brink of dropping our connection in favor of Time Warner if it doesn't get corrected soon as a number of us in the apartment rely on a stable connection for work.

We're in 10027, New York City, Upper West Side / Columbia University area. Our internet works for a few hours, then totally cuts out, then slowly comes back, creeping along (like it's doing right now), taking a good ten seconds just to ping websites, and then forever to load pages, etc. Then suddenly, at some point in the middle of the night, it magically starts working fine again for a few hours.

This has been going on for a week. We already had a tech come down on Monday that couldn't do a thing, thinking everything with the line was fine. We subscribe to the highest tier and obviously can't get anywhere near the advertised speed let alone a stable connection.

Two days ago, our cable tv, with the one line with have a DVR, started randomly cutting out and restarting then taking a number of tries before it would boot. Possibly related, I don't know.

Does anyone have a clue because this is really turning comical? We're giving it through the weekend and then it's straight to Time Warner.

edit: Here's a log of error messages coming from the modem (WCG200) --

Also running: ny.speedtest.rcn.net, up slightly but still pretty deplorable:

I don't have an answer to your question. For what it's worth, I live in 10023 (UWS/Lincoln Center area), am at home and online for much of the day, and do not have any of these issues.

This has become absolutely ridiculous. It happens every single day, including right now. RCN has no idea what's causing it. It started again last night around 6pm and briefly came back up around midnight and it's been back to this since 8am this morning (Sunday). It's taking forever to ping any site, forever to download pages, and I can't really get anything at all uploaded over 20k or the internet dies completely.

What in the world is going on? Can anyone out there help us? Please. I'm begging at this point given the amount of work I need to get done this week and can't sit here going crazy for the 20 minutes, no joke, it takes to pull up a 3MB PDF file.

I'm telling you exactly where this is happening: in the XXXs on Claremont Avenue in 10027. Hell, our IP is 207.237.xxx.xxx. If anyone out there with RCN sees this and please, for the love god, can help us out, we will be forever thankful. I know at least I will so I won't have to continue carrying a 30 pound bag of books back and forth just to get to a place to be able to check my email.

I had the same errors on my Motorola SB5101.

I was getting similar signals.. My upstream was like 38-43 but in my experience, it looks like you have a ranging issue with your upstream power levels. It could be a number of things. Also, your downstream is really low at least in my experience. I have never gotten that low. The lowest I got during the problem (still ongoing but impoving) was +5 - 14 dB. You may not be making very well in to the node due to poor upstream and downstream. In other words your modem isn't hearing the signal very well and or your modem isn't putting enough power to get in. Check into it.

and yes, I know what you mean.. Ive had 10 techs out and they say it's fine.. Not to bash RCN but the techs aren't the brightest of people when it comes to diagnosing a very technical issue like that.

Hope it works out or if you already switched..

I need to update my original response of 16 days ago.

My Internet service went out completely on Saturday, 5/12. I called RCN and they wanted to talk me through some diagnostics which I declined for lack of time.

I phoned RCN back a couple of hours later and they first ran some diagnostics on their end. They determined that problem was with RCN and that my "area" was affected. They said they would put in a ticket to fix the problem and it was resolved that evening.

Yesterday, 4/19, I came home at around 5pm and found that my router had no Internet connection. I rebooted the modem and router and everything was fine. I suspect that broadband had gone down sometime during the day.

These outages are very rare for me. I've had broadband with RCN since 1999 and have generally found uptime to be 99%.

Here's my best guess as to what is going on. Welcome to the world of upstream noise. Your levels are great. If you really into the DOCSIS specs 0 dBmv is actually optimal on the downstream. Especially in the apartment world, if there are any illegal connections or bad ones it can throw noise into your return path. Your modem cannot "talk" over the amount of garbage in the path. This can be challenging to track down, but the line guys spend a good amount of time troubleshooting this type of problem. There is a history kept of the trouble and the trouble can get resolved once you get the right person to work on it.

I don't know what kind of company RCN is running and I want to be very nice about this, but I just spent two hours with two different people in the Philippines that got me absolutely nowhere.

After waiting 27 minutes for CSR #1, I was informed that nothing could be done. The CSR apologized. I explained it had been going on for weeks and asked if a tech could be sent to look, with a tech having looked previously a few weeks ago. She said that it would cost $49.95 to send a technician and was very sorry. Then, like that, she hung up.

I called back, waited again, got CSR #2. Repeated the story. 30 minutes later, I was told that there were four tickets on this problem from previous weeks and they had all shown the same issue (packet loss, I was being told) and that they were all resolved. I explained that clearly they had not been resolved. So I asked again if a tech could be sent down here. When she told me that wouldn't be possible, and instead insisted I run through the diagnostics again (which I did, the same power cycling I do on my own, etc), she said she would have to submit another ticket. Not sure what these tickets do, but they must be fun. Anyway, she then said that she had to follow protocol in that nothing more could be done, now an hour into our call (with lots of silence and holds). I asked to speak with a supervisor that might be able to better understand the situation or perhaps jump protocol to set a tech call. I was told that the supervisor was on the phone and it would be another 30 minute wait. I explained that it's pushing midnight. She apologized and hung up.

And there's my story.

By the way, about an hour ago, the DS and US lights were blinking (not turning solid) for a long time rendering the internet completely out of service (until it came back up, at a snail's pace again, a few minutes ago).

Don't get me started. I'm still fighting with them going on 3.5 months . They refuse to listen to me when I tell them to run a flap-test. They insist on coming out and testing signals.. But, I like fighting them and I'm getting a refund anyway.

heh

Best of luck..

RCN's speeds are not as good as they used to be. I used to get solid 20 down on 3 test sites including RCN own speed test and now I am lucky to get over 15 down past midnight. I am now debating on downgrading the service to Mach 10.

I am hoping this is just temporary issues, but from my surfing of late, I have noticed the pages do not download like they used to.

Looks like I am not the only one in the local area with internet issues.

In XBOX Live games playing Call of Duty 4, I barely get above 3 bars and if I am the random host, other players around me stutter.

Joe M, can you please look into this issue. Thanks.

Yeah, they use a crappy java software called Speedcheck.

The companies URL is »www.mediaroad.com/products/speedcheck/

Here's a screenshot on their page hehe. RCN makes you think they have their own speed tester..

I wouldn't use it if I were you. The best way to judge speed is to actually download a big file like for example an ubuntu iso cause that's what you'd be doing as a "real world" example.

Try this url, select a location and download and watch your speed. That would be a more accurate result...

No offense intended but I strictly speak for myself and the lineman that came by when we were getting faster speeds on other servers. we used md.speedtest.rcn.net which is like so close i can touch it..

part of that was frustration because RCN is brushing me off and sounds like they don't want me as a customer... They keep sending techs out to test the signal.. my sb4200 is spec at -15 - +15dBmV down and up to 58 dB up.. it's at 52

I'm getting T4 timeouts.. ranging problems which causes slow and irratic speeds as well as causing my modem to soft reboot (flap)

If you would and I'd greatly appreciate it check out mine..
HFC MAC = 00:0B:06:34:53:74

and I'm right upstream from a minibridger that is one house to my right. And I drove the distance following the line on the poles to the node. It's 0.3mi following the cables.
I know the bridge next to me and there is one more it goes through before it banks off towards the node. I know this because I had the same problem before and I saw them check down the line.. This time I didn't reach the right people so I'm dealing with a Customer Service Advocate who doesn't return any of my phone calls and has no technical background.. gerr frustrating.. plz help! =) I think they may need to bring out that HP spectrum analyzer like they did last time but it seems I'm getting nowhere...

Downstream received signal power = 16.5 dBmV

Upstream transmit signal power = 52.0 dBmV

Re: [Connectivity] NYC 10027 - What's going on here?

Both the downstream and upstream power levels are high. As for the downstream, it depends on the ability of your modem to handle it. Recently, I was getting as much as 21 dBmv from my ISP after they did some upgrade work; my Motorola SB5120 shrugged it off and continued working fine, but other makes/models may not be so forgiving.
