[Niagara] internet issue

A few days ago I have been having the internet slow right down or cut out on me completely. I have eliminated everything else (DNS, browser issue, router etc.). Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing this with cogeco at this time.

Is this a recurring issue?

Have you checked your ether-net cables?

If you think that everything is ok, then do some speed tests to ensure that you are geting what you should.

I also would suggest that there is a tool called smoke pinng.

try that. It pings your ip every 5 minutes or so, from 2 or three different places on the map. You can let that run for a couple of days.

I would think that might tell you over time what is happening.

Yes I have been experiencing the same problems in Welland. My connection drops about 10 times a day and has been happening for the past two weeks.

This is ridiculous....

i have been having the same problem for days... i have reset the modem and the router a few times hoping to pick up a different server or something but i get nothing

my ping to google averages about 50ms and speedtest.net wont even start the test until 7-8 seconds later and it reports a 46ms ping.... then the test says i got 503/109?

what the heck am I paying for???

I for one am about to jump ship into another ISP...

I get irregular service from a company that wants me to pay twice as much as the competition... they offer an outsourced support service and take forever to fix anything... not to mention hours of hold time...

ARG!

1)What, specifically, is your issue?
a) Is there a specific time that this issue is most prevalent?

I have the problem during peak hours (4pm-10pm)

b) How long has this issue been going on? (days, weeks, months etc)

For about a month now.

2) Do you have cable TV? If so, is there any reception degradation..what channels?

Channels 3&4 occasionally have some distortion.

3) Have you contacted customer support about this problem? If so, what did they say?

Nothing, because I have given up talking to them as it is the same thing over and over, tech comes out says everything fine and then leaves,

4) What troubleshooting steps have you taken to resolve this problem? (aka: if you haven't tried to help yourself, why should *we* help you?)

The gambit...reset modem, disabled firewall and antivirus, unplugged router, connected directly to the modem, still same problems.

5) Info about you:

Well I am a cancer, 5'5", married, but like a good time...WTF are you looking for here!

a) What city are you in?
Welland

b) What is your operating system?
Vista Ultimate (ya I know it sucks)

c) What is your home network setup? Provide details.
Cisco dual WAN router with fail over to Teksavvy!!!!

d) If you have more than one computer, is the problem occurring on all other machines?
You bet!

e) Are you running a firewall of any sort? Have you ever installed one? Did you try to turn it off during troubleshooting?

I have turned it off and still same problem. The problem is an overloaded node. During off peak hours I get 14/.9 which is great. camper.

f) Please supply a traceroute from you to www.dslreports.com. Unedited and in text format. (edit out your IP if you wish).

1

b) Speed Issues: post at least one speed test. (although these are not considered proof of a problem)
c) Latency: Traceroutes traceroutes traceroutes. Pings too.

Is there anyone at Cogeco that can look into his problem? He did go through the trouble of filling out the form, and it doesn't sound like he's getting anywhere going through normal channels.

We did meet before and you did a great job when you were here. I hear you about the day off, ENJOY. Whenever you can take a look at it would be great. Weekends are when they are the worse for speed loss or weekdays between 4-10 PM. Today (Friday April 18th has been very good, no problems).
Take care.

Hi Nighthawk,

Can you give more details on your "Cisco dual WAN router"? What model router are you using, and have you tried bypassing the router for some testing direct to your PC?

Everything looks good currently.

Thanks,
Matt

Hi DrDog.
Well things have gone from good to really bad. We had a notice in our building PVC was going to be making some improvements to our building and yet I can't get close to the speeds that I was getting. It was like they add a couple of hundred extra connections to our already overloaded node. Am back to surfing at 1-3 megs most of the time with peaks in off hours from 6-8 megs. I giving this one last chance and then I am pulling the plug on Cogeco as I am so tired of this up and down speeds.

Not sure Randy, I have been off since Wednesday, it is possible they may not be done yet.
I seriously doubt they added more connections in your node, if anything they would have split the node.
But I suspect they were doing panel upgrades, you would not believe what the panel look like on your roof, I will check in on the posted alerts later today

And thanks Urban, got to meet your neighbours the other day, I thought the bldg at end of their property was an outhouse. lol

I can believe it when you say the panel looks like crap. Maybe that is what is holding them up as I haven't seen them in over a week. I couldn't even get connected to facebook until I closed the Cogeco connection and switched over to the standby Teksavvy connection.
