Network stumbler vs Intel ProSet Wireless

I recently made some changes in my LAN: replaced a DI-624 router with a Linksys WRT54G, updated Comodo firewall and upgraded my Intel ProSet Wireless drivers on my XP/pro.sp2 laptop.

For some reason, when I run Netstumbler, a msg box pops up from the Intel Configuration service telling me that another wireless LAN utility is communicating with the Intel ProSet LAN adapter and to avoid conflicts, the profile management features have been temporarily disabled.

At this point I can no longer connect to the internet or browse my LAN from the laptop. When I mouse over the ProSet icon in the systray, it is gray and gives the same msg about another wireless network utility is communicating with the ProSet wireless adapter.

To re-establish my laptop's connection to the LAN and the internet, I have to close NetStumbler, re-enable the ProSet Wireless and then repair the connection.

I don't recall this behavior with Netstumber/Intel ProSet Wireless before. I can use the WZC utility and let Windows manage the wireless adapter and then NetStumbler will run alongside the LAN/Internet just fine.

I am running Comodo Firewall v3.0.21.329 and the Intel ProSet Wireless is v11.5.

As a side note, when I updated to the v11.5 Proset driver, I had to update my Hcontrol driver (controls the hot buttons on my Asus Z71A laptop) as there was a conflict with the new Intel driver.

Anyone seen this problem with Netstumber/ProSet? Is there a fix? (short of backing up to the earlier version of ProSet). I know the easy fix is to use WZC, but I'd like to have the option to use ProSet too.

With previous versions of PROSet, I would disable WZC to stop them from fighting for control but I now leave WZC enabled. Netstumbler does cause PROSet to complain but for me at least, it doesn't disrupt my wireless connection but I do have to tell PROSet to take control when I am done. I don't run Netstumbler that often to find it annoying enough to roll back my version of PROset.

What do you use Netstumbler for and have you tried Inssider?

First let me update the OP. Seems that Netstumbler actually does disable the WZC utility and I cannot run them concurrently as I originally posted.

I normally use the ProSet utility and have seen that msg about disabling the WZC utility when I crank up NS but it has never affected me until now. I find it curious that the latest Proset utility won't work concurrently with NS. At least, not for me.

I like to use Netstumbler to get a graphical representation of signal strengths available.

Edit: which version of Proset are you using? I went from 9.0.3.9 to 11.5.0.0. (well, the drivers are actually 9.0.4.37)

Like I said, I used to disable WZC but no longer do since Inssider needs WZC to work. I have the latest PROSet on both my laptop and my Tablet PC. For some reason Stumbler will disable PROSet on my Tablet but not on my laptop but I haven't taken the time to figure out why. I don't recall Stumbler ever complain about WZC.

I'll hafta check out Inssider. Hadn't heard of it until you mentioned it.

Running the old rev drivers, I always got the msg that the WZC was being stopped. But since I had it disabled anyway and was using the Proset utility, it never affected my operation.

If comparing RSSI of available APs is all you want, Inssider is better than Netstumbler; it's all that Inssider does: provide a graphical representation of RSSI levels relative to your AP. Numbers are provided, of course.

Nice... I just installed Inssider. For my purposes, I think it will replace NetStumbler. Inssider works well with my current Proset utility too.

Thanks guys.

Good to hear. I use Inssider for RSSI levels and Stumbler mostly when I am out and about with my pointy stick hunting down rogue APs.
