Not everyone is downloading movies or on myspace. Comcast receives a boatload of money from its subs, it's a huge company. There should be a contingency plan in place, or at least some method to notify its customers that the network is down. Hmmmm..if you manage 1000 machines and it's that critical shouldn't YOU have a backup plan other than a residential internet connection? |

1 edit | reply to beerbum said by beerbum :I've worked in the cable, telco and electric distribution fields, one thing I can tell you is that they all suffer from the same lack of communication.. it has been my experience in all three fields that the #1 priority is to fix and or reroute around the problem.. that is the primary focus.. for announcing a problem, in most cases the problem is fixed before the knowledge of the outage gets to the senior management folk who make the decision to notify about the outage. I guess you've never heard of Crisis Management (CM)? The companies I have worked for in the past and present have always had a CM department. While the Ops crew (me) was busy repairing a major fault, CM was busy notifying our customers. The customers were never kept out of the loop and were fully aware. ComCrap is obviously quite the opposite. 'They' are working on it, who knows what 'they' are 'working' on and they never, ever have a ETR.
Edit: Oh yeah, up in 07036. |

My plan? As I said in my original post, a bridged PCS connection. Or I can drive to any of the 1000+ machines and access that network from there. Yes, it is inconvenient; but the point is that 12+ hours with nobody having a clue is completely unacceptable. |

I monitor AHP's (At Home Professionals) who use there computer to take incoming and outgoing phone calls, and when things like this happen, it makes it so hard for one, AHP's in the area to get on and 2 for me to be able to monitor them successfully. |

Sure, but his point was that nobody at comcast is very helpful, in so many words.
It's unacceptable in his opinion.
It's an opinion that I happen to agree with. |

| reply to bobsap Well it's definitely working. I also got an automated call from Comcast saying the problem was fixed (they stopped taking support calls earlier and the only option was to have them call you when it was fixed).
There's still no answer given as to what exactly was the problem. --

| reply to bobsap Same issue.
I was doing a software install for AT&T and planned on working from home. The one day things go to crap.
Thankfully, Verizon FIOS is coming to my street (finally!). Maybe the competition will force both of them to provide decent customer service.
Just got to get my primary email switched to something like gmail and get everything else isp-agnostic so I can switch back and forth as needed to reward crappy service.

While internally there may be an ETR, the problem with sharing that is that in creates an expectation that may not be met due to unforeseen circumstances, creating two calls when there may have only been 1.
People really did care that there was a problem and it was unfortunate that it went on as long as it did.
I wonder, though, what kind of explanation of the outage would suffice for both technical and non-technical people? Heck, I've seen the explanation and even I don't understand it completely. Then again, I am not a network engineer. -- "I try to make everyone's day a little more surreal." -Calvin |
