[TWC] SA Explorer 4250 HDC

I just upgraded to HDTV and they gave me the Scientific Atlanta Explorer 4250 HDC, although I requested the Samsung H3050 box (says so on the work order).

Right now I'm still waiting for my Sony Bravia 46" KDL-XBR4 to be delivered so the box is hooked up to a regular tv @480i (that's what says on the box near the time of day)

Anyone have the SA 4250? Is it any good? Should I ask for another box? I paid $30 to twc for delivery/install, since I'm too lazy to go pick one up.

@rr.com

From what I have seen from friends with the new hd boxes, you probably got what they had available to give.

It might be a good thing. If they are not actively stocking the Samsung it might be because is has been troublesome for more than a few customers. Of course it could also be that they just got a better buy on the Scientific Atlanta's.

Hook it up when you get your tv and take it for a test drive. If it is a dud, go to the nearest customer service center and beg for the Samsung.

Please let the forum know if it is good or dud. Thanks.

Do they have that box available in NYC?
Stay with that box buddy! Samsung boxes are not as good as SA boxes and they don't allow to use some features that Mystro has, like Stretching Video format with the "ratio" button on the remote control. I have a SA 8300 hdc, and it works great with my 42 Plasma TV.I also have a LCD hooked up with a Samsung box but I can't stretch the ratio from standard to wide(Neither using the remote or any button the cable box). I can go on and on about how bad the Samsung boxes are,but I'm about to head out .

So Keep that box! I will go to get one of those SA 4250 hdc for my LCD tv to a TWC center this week :P

Welp, I hooked my XBR4 to the SA 4250 with component cables and rca/audio cables that came with the box with no problems.

Picture looks great! I have the box set @ 16:9/1080i/Normal.

The box booted quick too! Like 5 mins., I didn't hook my dvd player though.

Question: Should I hook up my dvd player to the TV or STB?
I have composite cables for dvd player for now.

Thanks.

I just wanna let everyone know that the SA 4250 HDC is a piece of garbage. The box crashed on me, it got stuck and I couldn't change channels, had to re-boot. And now almost every time I shut the box off I have to re-boot.

I'm definately changing boxes. What box should I get?
Thanks.

Btw: I don't have DVR service.

SA boxes work usually pretty well. I've never had a problem with it.
It can be that the box is upgrading the cable card software. There have been upgrading the software twice, and perhaps the box is trying to download all the information while you are trying to use it.If you think that that SA box sucks, get the Samsung one.

I was at a friends house last night and it rebooted 2 times (Took 10 min to come back each time) Pain in the ass..... (Although all of thier IRDs seem to reboot alot)

1 thing i liked about it was IT SHOWED THE HD STUFF IN STANDARD DEF!! (Her TV isnt HD so i was surprised to see the HD stuff -- Only box i know that converts it to Standard -- But if the stupid thing reboots all the time its worthless.... Does not having enough ram cause this??)

It has an option to ZOOM,NORMAL,STRETCH but i tried that on an HD stream that had LETTEBOX and it didnt work.....

I dont like watching HD stuff IN HD because the size isnt right and it doesnt look good...... (Some of the pic is off the screen)

The changing of the channels is really nice and fast,i was surprised @ that also........ (Most of thier IRDs dont have enough RAM in them and are very slow)

I just got this box.
I have the box set at 16:9/1080i/Normal. And its connected through component cable. I am watching HD channels most of the time, so my question is why cable box menus are always in 4:3 ratio even if I have changed setting to 16:9?
Is it possible to fix this somehow?

I had Samsung box before, changed it because it was too slow, but on Samsung I have not had this problem.

Thanks!

I installed this box yesterday to enable Caller ID on TV and no problems yet. Everything works great but I have to get a new HDMI cable as the old box had HDMI/DVI cable.

Installed the HDMI to HDMI cable but it is hard to see any difference between the digital and analogue TV signal. I now have a HDMI to DVI cable if anyone is interested and/or needs one.
