I once read an old (c. 1980) paper from IBM. The part of it that has always stuck with me concerned what the bulk of IBM's service calls involved: Repairing lousy wiring (data cables) and problems with the electric power source. I've seen and had my share of bad grounding being the source of problems. Could that be what is troubling here too?
