Comodo apparently licensed the firewall to another company, whose reputation appears to be in question, but their Comodo firewall is still free for anyone downloading from the Comodo site.

Very interesting thread. I agree with Horrified's posts. Melih's responses sound canned.

It just illustrates why I will never use Comodo's products. Free, in Commodo's case, exacts too high a price.

Comodo is free as is and if you download from Comodo. That same free product is also licensed to some other company that charges for what they incorporate it with. Some unlucky punters will pay for something they can have for free. Unlucky in software choice, lucky in love?

As per a previous post, I've renently been in the process of choosing a new firewall to replace my expiered ZA Pro, and have been considering Comodoa and, thanks to folks here, Online Armor. This new development leads me to lean towards the latter. NOT because they licensed the technology to someone else to integrate into some other product, but because ihere looks like something may be off with Comodo due to the "canned" response from the developer, and the other product comes from a company with a questionable reputation, if true.

Will wait til Mikey tries it (or the savvy folks here shed more light on this.)

What is that high price?

Perhaps Melih's is gathering all of the facts before posting.

You might also think about whether or not you want a firewall (of all things) from a company that is known to issue trusted certs to malware companies (not just porn dialers and spyware). Now GoDaddy does it also but then I have Firefox configured to block any site with a GoDaddy or Comodo cert. I may manually override the block but I want to always be alerted to any GoDaddy and Comodo certs in particular.

Melih himself edited Horrified's last post #69 about ten minutes ago. I read it at 3AM but I was awfully sleepy and don't recall what it said that Melih edited out just now.

I think the "grafitti" added by the mods to all of Horrified's post just serves to make them stand out even more. I have no idea what the mods had in mind when doing that to each of his posts. But then to me, most everyone, mods included, at Comodo forums, are naive folks and inexperienced computer users whom I doubt have ever followed good security forums.

As for the site in question regarding Comodo's issuing trusted certs to spyware sites, porn dialer sites, etc. I can't cite a specific site. What I know comes from confidential information from someone whom I respect greatly in the security industry. I don't tend to go to porn dialer sites or much of any sites that even Site Advisor objects to so I haven't encountered Firefox blocking a site because of the cert being from Comodo and the site turns out to be a porn dialer, etc. site.

Hmmh, a forum with the tagline "Creating Trust Online" censoring a user's comments to the point where they are obliterated.

Yeah, that sure gives one that warm and fuzzy trust feeling.

What a stupid move on Melih's part; combined with the issue about certs, if correct, this whole thing, including the editing of threads and the possible "selling out" to a suspect vendor, has served to turn me off Comodo.

I have always had absolute trust in Kevin from the BOClean days, so when they were sold to Comodo, I thought Comodo deserved a try, as I felt that was a recommendation. I'm disappointed to hear that there are reasons to doubt Coodo's "cleanliness".

I guess this discussion has veered from the OP in focus, but I'm glad for what I've learned here.

I should correct my earlier statement "But then to me, most everyone, mods included, at Comodo forums, are naive folks and inexperienced computer users whom I doubt have ever followed good security forums." I stand by it with the exception of the BoClean users from before BoClean got bought by Comodo. Users of the original BoClean certainly are not naive and inexperienced computer users but they don't make up the bulk of the Comodo users.

As a former BOClean user I have to agree with Mele20 about the Comodo forums.
I used BOC for about 2 years prior to it being bought by Comodo and when I visited that forum it seemed so childish and immature but this really should come as no suprise, just take a look at the Matousec threads.

Hmmm. I used to use Comodo in the past and had to program in high regard because it was free, LOL! Anyway I ended my relationship with software FWs after the famous thread "El Cheapo router challenge" where it was proven that Windows FW was as good as a paid one in terms of inbound protection. Anyway if someone has to worry about outbound protection, who cares the machine is already KAPUT!

To cut the rambling short:

I remember Melih saying: This FW would be free forever!

Today that only applies to those how download it from Comodo's site.

Tomorrow, maybe for those who are capable of solving the velocity of one cubic meter of air in a 10 ft column of water; water and air temp are both 80 degrees F; water is non saline and clean; and the form of the bubble is a sphere.

If we look further into the future then it would be Comodo FW = $

Best thing to do is stop using it and believing in snake oil, install a quality router and reactivate Windows FW.

Cheers.
