| Trane XL 1200 sucking in
I recently had my heatpump worked on and so I'm not sure if this is right...
The outdoor unit kicked on to cool the house today and I noticed that the fan was drawing air down into the unit from the top and exhausting out the sides. Is this right? I thought it was supposed to exhaust out the top while drawing in from the sides instead. I'm wondering if the heatpump guys hooked the fan up backwards. Is this even a DC fan and is it reversible?
I'm just concerned that if it is sucking in from the top it will pull leaves into the unit. -- "The penalty good men pay for indifference to public affairs is to be ruled by evil men." - Plato - |

| That doesn't sound good! If the fan blade were put on upside down that could do it - I don't think that the motor reverses easily on a single phase system, which is what you likely have.If you are certain the airflow is coming in through the top and out through the bottom you have good reason to call the company back, and it shouldn't cost you anything. -- Simple rules - no offsides, no intent to maim, everything else is all good! |

1 edit | reply to Sly Unlike what common sense would suggest, flipping a fan blade around does not reverse the air flow. You have to reverse the rotation or change the pitch of the blades by X degrees.
The motor in there would be AC. With most AC motors you'd actually have to rewire it internally in order to reverse it's direction. So this is rather unlikely.
In other words you'd have to try pretty hard to reverse the flow of air on an AC unit. Therefore it's probably the way the unit was designed. Seems kind of unusual but it's not impossible. |

| reply to Sly After looking around it looks like this unit is supposed to exhaust out the top.
Any idea how I can reverse it? Of course I could just call the AC company and I will probably do that, but I'm pretty competent in electronics and could just save some trouble and do it myself. -- "The penalty good men pay for indifference to public affairs is to be ruled by evil men." - Plato - |

| They replaced the compressor. It shorted out internally and burned out the wiring harness... That's why I (now)think they wired it up wrong. -- "The penalty good men pay for indifference to public affairs is to be ruled by evil men." - Plato - |

My first guess was going to be the run capacitor. I believe in this unit, as in most units these days, there is a "dual" run capacitor, which works for the fan and the compressor. The capacitor should have been changed with the compressor change-out. The OEM motor is not reversible, so mis-wiring seems unlikely, although not out of the question. If it is mis-wired, I would recommend not operating the unit. -- Blog | - - - | Hunt's Treasure |

It sucks air in on the sides and exhausts out the top (black plastic area). It shouldn't be sucking in air from the top.
Also, out of curiosity, how much did a compressor job cost you for this unit? |

I just checked the sticker on the motor and it's definitely turning backwards. Since it's an a/c motor, how can it change direction like that? |

Just a guess but as mentioned there may be a split cap in that unit if so they will have installed a new one as part of the compressor change out. Now if the tech flipped the start wiring to the cap the motor will rotate in reverse.
Have the A/C company send a tech out and clear the problem one they need to know the job was done in-correctly and two you don't want to make an error and buy another compressor.

| I talked to the company today and that was their guess too. They are sending someone out today to fix it. Thanks.
I told him it was still cooling but he said that on a real hot day, it would build up too much head pressure and shut down due to it not getting enough air flow. |
