Tried to open my remote desktop connection today and go the following...

WTF???
Windows update shows nothing. |

Maybe an update/reinstall will help?

Now what??? LOL |

Crap, crap crap. I bet that is it and I am probably hosed until the final release, huh? |
|
Oregonian Premium join:2000-12-21 West Linn, OR | Well, my guess is that since you're running SP3 you won't be able to reinstall it so your only chance is to repair it.
Is it too late to try a System Restore back to when it was working? |

Guess I have to wait until the actual release to see if that fixes it. |

Sorry I wasn't more help. |

| I believe that the OP tried that already but, since he is running SP3, it wouldn't install. |

| said by Oregonian :I believe that the OP tried that already but, since he is running SP3, it wouldn't install. Yes, I missed that part, but in retrospect, I believe these are two different updates. The one I linked to is a stand alone package that will run on various non-SP2 platforms, and may not tangle itself with the logistics of which SP it finds in the host OS. Might still be worth a try. |

| Thanks BigEd for pointing me in the right direction. I uninstalled SP3 RC2 and it worked right away. I have automatic updates turned on and it told me it wanted to install SP3 RC2. A little further researched revealed that MS has recently released SP3 RC2 "refresh". Since it was coming up a security update I went ahead and installed it and am happy to say that remote desktop connection is still working. If worse came to worse I was going to reimage my HD being I am also running WHS here at home and do daily backups.
Thanks again BigEd. |

| reply to Stu Pidaso Hrm I can't even uninstall SP3rc2, "it may have already been uninstalled". what a crock. So now I'm totally unable to access remote desktops.
I can't reinstall the rdp client from the previous link either, as it's for the wrong service pack version.
This is really hurting me. Look like no work today! |

| reply to Stu Pidaso I have sp3 on my computer and under add remover programs sp3 is listed to be removed. so try removing it, this is the only thread I have come across saying anything about this problem as of yet. It is quite a bother to have to kick someone off their computer to do work on the server just because of this BS.
Well I am about to try this so good luck to you as well. |

| reply to Stu Pidaso Just tried this, so and RDC is working now. I am led to believe that they have bundeled a Pre-Release (hince the Pre-Release in the dilogue) and removing the un-official SP3 removed the Pre-Release version of the RDC.
I kind of liked the features in that one, oh well.
hope this puts this to rest. |

@verizon.net | Big scare when I tried to remote into a system at work today.
I resolved the problem by copying mstsc.exe and mstscax.dll in "c:\windows\system32" over from an XP SP2 Machine. Works great and I get to keep SP3 |

@verizon.net | Revision: Only works when run from another location, still errors when run from "windows\system32" |
