| 4pm - 12am traffic shaping problem list
I am starting this thread to act as a list of users that are experiencing the 4pm-12am traffic shaping / bandwidth throttling issue. Please do not post in this topic for other problems, general slowness, or discussion of the problem. I hope this will become a place where we can direct entities of importance (bbb, consumer protection, etc.) for a data set that they may use. One could also infer how widespread this problem is. If you are experiencing this issue and wish, could you please post a single post such as this

| It appears that this is your first post and you've taken a big step towards credibility by not posting anonymously. But I have to ask, what steps have you taken to try and resolve your speed issues?
I would be the last to argue that these issues don't exist, but one of the first, from experience, that addressed properly, Hughes will remedy these issues.
I would assume you've been lurking to post such a clear, non ranting post as you have. But by lurking, which I have no problem with, I did it about one year before joining myself, that you might have noticed that the jury is still out on whether this is traffic shaping or congestion.
Oh, and I almost forgot, welcome to the HughesNet forum. -- I'm folding and crunching to try to help prevent stories like »Update on my son who has cancer

This test history is meaningless as there is a complete absence of test results between 4 pm and 11 pm. Do you understand time zones ?
Even if you do - and considering that my speed tests generally coincide with dubious complaints about throughput (or traffic shaping) - I believe you just made my point.
Consider also that I mentioned cherry-picking. Rejecting input that doesn't conform to a preconceived notion - fits that category perfectly.

| reply to Bisk I have been experiencing poor browsing performance from about 3:30PM-11:59PM M-F consistantly since March 11. I placed 4 service calls to tech support for this issue and as of 3/31 when I spoke with tier3 tech support the issue remains unresolved. The tier3 tech I spoke with told me that 91W is maxed out with subscribers. No new subscribers will be added to the satellite. Moreover, no existing subscriber to 91W can even change thier plan without a dish repoint to another satellite. No estimate when I will see any improvement to this situation.
I have noticed that during the slow browsing periods, the HN7000S will have its flow control enabled. I suspect that this function is being manipulated in a effort to reduce congestion with the undesirable effect of severly limiting bandwidth.

That's positive reinforcement that the problem is simply one of selective over-subscription. Four to midnight approximates the peak internet usage period. Too many people trying to share shared bandwidth. There is no nefarious traffic shaping conspiracy.

Greg , your test really don't show a single result from the affected times . The test results reflect hughesnets eastern time zone and not your own . I know this for a fact . You need test results for after 4pm and before 12 am est . But even if yours is ok , I am scientific enough to know some of us DOOO have a problem that has nothing to do with normal congestion . I'd be very happy to have my old normal congestion problems back . At least then I had a fighting chance .
These problems begin at exactly the stroke of 4 pm and end at exactly 12am and remain constant throughout the period and do support the nefarious charge of shaping or taking away whatever you wanna call it .
On another note after I got nowhere with hughesnet tecj support and they got thru running their diagnostics my good speeds during unaffected times now peak at only around 700 for the first time ever since I've owned this system . I have always gotten mid 800's until that fateful phonecall .

Have even so much as called Executive Customer Care with well documented issues? Have you explained that level four has basically told you they can't help you?
I see a ton of complaining here but seldom do I see people see past their anger about their complaints enough to take effective actions to resolve them.
I am in 100% agreement that it's a horrible business practice on Hughes's part to subject their customers to this, but it is what it is. -- I'm folding and crunching to try to help prevent stories like »Update on my son who has cancer

It took several phone calls to Hughes and at least an hour of trying to lock onto 91w unsuccessfully before they relented to a new satellite for my new dish. | | Vtblues if you can't get out of it, get in to it Premium join:2006-05-29 Brookfield, VT clubs:

| reply to Anon I did not participate in that thread. I'd also like to ask where Karl mentioned traffic shaping in that article.
I would like to point out that neither Greg nor myself are trying argue or "have the last word" What we are doing is trying to use our more than six month history of looking into and helping solve others issues with Hughes for no other reason than we've each found some effective ways of doing so. Greg, with his long history of two way satellite communications on the technical side, and I with my experience at getting Hughes support to work for me and others.
It seems your lack of ability to accept any explanation other than traffic shaping might be rooted in your inability to understand that traffic shaping would affect 100% of the users on whatever given satellite it was being practiced on and that just isn't happening.
I would ask you to point out to me where the traffic shaping is in this 6:24 pm speed test.
I wish you success in resolving your speed issues. -- I'm folding and crunching to try to help prevent stories like »Update on my son who has cancer
