[OC] Q6600 to 3Ghz tape mod OC question

I have a Dell with 1066FSB mobo and 667 RAM. The FSB cannot be changed. Will the Q6600 tape mod work on my setup? I have the G0 stepping Q6600. How much hotter will it run at 3Ghz? Thanks!

Well for one , my eye sight isn't that great but I can't tell which ( dots ) he connected there .
Now on to the heat question . Just expect your Fan to run at max all the time.

And to the last thing I would say DON'T DO IT ....

The lower right hand corner. It looks like an inverted "C".

It may work, but if you blow it, it's $250 for a new proc.

However, this is highly suspicious in my mind. The author suggests just putting the computer back together, without reapplying thermal paste. Not a wise thing, IMHO. Not wise at all.

Yes not only did he not say to replace the thermal compound he said be careful not to wipe it off so that it can be reused... It doesnt work like and is almost as bad as using no thermal compound. The fact he says to reuse the thermal compound shows he doesnt know what hes talking about and chances are that mod actually doesnt work.

What model Dell to you have? I got in on that Inspiron 530 deal a few weeks back and did the BSEL/"tape" mod. The motherboard is a Foxconn G33 variant.

So far, I've only heard success stories and not a single failure (at least one that couldn't be reversed). My processor gets up to about 50 degrees and on cores 1 & 2 under full load (playing TF2, music, compressing videos) for an hour. I cleaned the stock thermal paste off and replaced with Arctic Silver 5.

I didn't bother doing any load testing before the mod so it'd be interesting to see before and after performance differences.

Also, this method is much simpler than using conductive ink or a larger tape patch: »www.ocforums.com/attachment.php?···04094697 Just put some electrical tape on a piece of glass and use a razor to cut a piece the correct size to cover that pin.

If you're gonna do it, do it right.

Create 4 folders with superpi in each one. Superpi, superpi1, superpi2, superpi3.

After you launch em, and before you hit the "calculate" button, go into task manager and set the affinity as "one superpi per core". Then hit the calculate button.

I have a Precision 390 workstation. Looks like the mobo only supports 1066FSB.

BTW, my stock Q6600 idles at around 35-40 degrees. Is it cool enough? I'm thinking about getting a better heatsink to run it cooler.

Tell me this do you have a direct fan on the heatsink on is ? Is it a shroud around the heatsink and a case fan pulling air out ?

And same question as Cerdan ( or close to ), Are you running the system stock heatsink and shroud set up ?

Yes, I'm running the stock heatsink with the shroud. It's the old style big aluminum block heatsink. Dell just sent me another one with copper pipes and fins. The surface area is much larger. So I'm wondering if I should bother taking my workstation apart just to change the heatsink if the old heatsink is keeping the Q6600 cool enough already at around 35 degrees idle.

35c sound good enough to me . Is that before or after the mod ?

May I ask why DELL sent you a new heatsink ?
Just out curiosity can you take a picture of the new heatsink the sent out and upload here ? I'd like to see it .
