| reply to cerdan Re: [OC] Q6600 to 3Ghz tape mod OC question
What model Dell to you have? I got in on that Inspiron 530 deal a few weeks back and did the BSEL/"tape" mod. The motherboard is a Foxconn G33 variant.
So far, I've only heard success stories and not a single failure (at least one that couldn't be reversed). My processor gets up to about 50 degrees and on cores 1 & 2 under full load (playing TF2, music, compressing videos) for an hour. I cleaned the stock thermal paste off and replaced with Arctic Silver 5.
I didn't bother doing any load testing before the mod so it'd be interesting to see before and after performance differences.
Also, this method is much simpler than using conductive ink or a larger tape patch: »www.ocforums.com/attachment.php?···04094697 Just put some electrical tape on a piece of glass and use a razor to cut a piece the correct size to cover that pin. |

| If you're gonna do it, do it right.
Create 4 folders with superpi in each one. Superpi, superpi1, superpi2, superpi3.
After you launch em, and before you hit the "calculate" button, go into task manager and set the affinity as "one superpi per core". Then hit the calculate button. -- Piss Poor Planning On Your Part, Doesn't Constitute an Emergency On Mine. |

Tell me this do you have a direct fan on the heatsink on is ? Is it a shroud around the heatsink and a case fan pulling air out ? -- Team DiscoveryJoin us help fight cancer. It's the old style big aluminum block heatsink. Dell just sent me another one with copper pipes and fins. The surface area is much larger. So I'm wondering if I should bother taking my workstation apart just to change the heatsink if the old heatsink is keeping the Q6600 cool enough already at around 35 degrees idle. |

| 35c sound good enough to me . Is that before or after the mod ?
May I ask why DELL sent you a new heatsink ? Just out curiosity can you take a picture of the new heatsink the sent out and upload here ? I'd like to see it . -- Team DiscoveryJoin us help fight cancer. Gooiool©2005 My Photo Site |

| reply to rtcpenguin 3GHz tape mod failed for me. Unlucky I guess
So I tried the tape mod today on my Dell Inspiron 530 "a.k.a. the slickdeals.net special".
Running A-Data 800MHz Ram 2x2GB, and Arctic Silver 5, I got the same numbers in Super PI, but when I ran Prime95 v25.4, in stress test on all 4 processors, I got HW failures within 1-2 minutes. Coretemp were mid-50C on temperature with the mod, slightly lower without the mod. No failures when backing down to 2.4GHz.
Any ideas? I suspect a memory problem at 3GHz, but memtest ran without failures. I am running the stock heatsink/fan for Dell Inspiron 530. |

| My guess is it is a RAM issue. I'll try to run Prime later today when I'm at home.
I find it strange that you had major problems with CPU temps only in the mid 50's. From what I've read online, these chips shouldn't have a problem reaching even the 80 degree C mark.
When I run OCCT (set temp max to 80), the CPU temp plateus at around 66-69 after 10 minutes of full load. I can hear the CPU fan throttling up and down to keep the temperature there. The chip is certainly capable of handling it. |

@comcast.net | Yeah, it is probably the memory. I got 5-5-5-18 PC6400 memory at 1.8v. I thought it would be good, but maybe not.
I don't have any other laying around at the moment, or I would try swapping it out. |

I just told Dell my PC is running hotter than my liking. They said there's a newer version available and sent it to me to replace my old one. It looks like this without the shroud:

| Thanks for the link , I like the way that looks . About the one core being cooler than the others . I would say it's normal . Most of the duals and quads I've looked at one side/core runs coolers than the other . Also DELL's temp. readings have never been that accurate .
If you got it use it ,try out that new heatsink and tell us if made any difference . And I imagine it will . -- Team DiscoveryJoin us help fight cancer. Gooiool©2005 My Photo Site |
