Comcast and Linksys router walkthrough needed

Hi there, I was hoping someone could help me out. I've read a few threads on how Comcast is blocking people from using a router. I was hoping someone who is knowledgeable could help me set things up.

I need to use my router for wireless use and I do have a Xbox360 . but most importantly I can't have my internet always disconnecting from me because I trade commodities on it during the day.

from what I understand you need to "trick" the modem. I'm sort of a newbie with networking so some help would be much appreciated.

I am using windows Vista 32

linksys router is:WRAT54G

Aris comcast cable modem

once again, I'd like to thank you all for the help.

There is no trickery , just plug all ethernet in like you are settiing it up , reset the Arris (small inset reset on back). Now release/renew all IPS and POOF it should work. I do on a daily basis and never have any trouble.

Comcast does not block the use of routers; they just don't provide phone support for the use of routers (other than any they issue for their home networking product).

With an Arris modem, if you never had a router connected, you would first power down the computer. Disconnect the computer from the modem, and then reset the modem. Resetting the modem with no device on the Ethernet port should clear the modem MAC address table.

Connect the router Internet (or WAN; depending upon labeling) port to the modem. Connect the computer to a LAN port on the router. Power up the router and wait for the lights to settle. Power up the computer.

At this point, you should have Internet connectivity.

P.S. If the Arris reset switch doesn't do the job, you will have to disconnect A.C. power and pull the battery pack.

you definatly need to reset the modem with the router off. then plug the router in and it should gain a comcast IP.
