| Using D-Link DCM-202 with Cogeco ?
Hi,
i'd like to know if anyone knows if the D-Link DCM-202 would work with cogeco, I heard it's one of the best modem and I wanted to get it since I can get it really cheap.

Is that totally legit with Cogeco to use a modem not provided by them?
I could care less either way, I've just always thought you had to use the one they gave you.
For ADSL, I know you can use any one that supported that appropriate protocol; D.GMT I think (digs deep into his dusty brain) |

As for Cogeco's view, they could probably care less that you're using a non-Cogeco modem since you're paying them the same amount of money and they have security systems in place to prevent more than one MAC being active per subscriber. They probably treat it the same way as a digital cable box that isn't provided by them. All in all, not that big a deal as far as Cogeco's concerned, or at least that's my feeling on the matter.
Having said that, you will most certainly get zero in the way of technical support and the TS staff may not be able to run line diagnostics if you call in. Cogeco may even bill you after a truck roll if they find you're using a third-party modem where a Cogeco-provided modem resolves the issue. You're also still responsible for the care of the modem Cogeco provided you, even if you're not using it. All in all, since Cogeco already provides you with an excellent modem that works well, why bother with anything else?

| Dunno for Cogeco Ontario, but in Québec there is no way we'll accept a foreign modem (not of the same built we already use/accept on the network)...
This is due, in part, to our config files which have to be 100% compatible; it may work at first but then if we change the config at one point and your modem won't synch, won't accept the new settings etc, you'll definatly be charged if a tech has to go to your home, plus the diagnostic pages aren't the same thus not supported by our tools (so we cannot do any diagnostics), all the more reasons to NOT go that route since the renting of a modem is pretty cheap; this also ensures you always get the best performances, compatibility and no charge if something happens to your modem, we'll change it free if it is rented (we have responsability of our equipments)...
All this said, Cogeco Québec has a strict rule to only accept RCA modems (with the exception of the Motorola VOIP one which we also see on our network, but in that case we only provide service to those who come from us, so even if a client bought one on Ebay or else, we won't provision it), there's a lot of other reasons but I think you get the idea... |

Having said that, Cogeco -does- officially use D-Link modems on its network for commercial accounts. I have three clients, all in different cities in Niagara, who got D-Link routers from Cogeco. Weird looking things, they look like cheap toys and have four Ethernet ports.
