wgm : Do not know at this time, but, the way gas prices are going, eventually (a little) better gas mileage car, currently driving a 2003 Buick Century, gets 21 city, 29 highway or so, its fine for now.

Hayward : Just got it.....

91 SAAB 900 Turbo convertible MUCH restored (on the order of $10K) for $2700 and 27 mpg even near that city if you drive gingerly.

With oil the way it is and alternatives not quite there yet... likely to last quite some time.

Did the math... Price difference between this great condition fun used car, and say a Preius or local electric (useless for evacuation)... even at $4/gal like 4000 gal plus... or well over 100K miles I am likely not gong to rack up in the Keys... in under 20 years, and taken care of SAAB are know to ROUTINELY go 250K miles or more, MILLION is on record. This one at 125K

No_Strings : Saw one in the showroom today. Love it, love it. Same subtle color as my S4. ;) It was used, but no sticker so I don't know how much they were asking or how many miles it had. I see what the reviews meant about the panoramic moonroof, though. It runs the whole way across the width of the roof. Beautiful. The S8 next to it was nice, too, but I'd have to live in it.

None of the sales guys were in this morning. I'll ask about the S5 when I go back this afternoon.

Iron Chef : I open mine a decent amount, so if it was gone I would kind of miss it. However, I test drove the S5, and the tilt only function was fine enough for me. Once I put my foot down on the gas, it was all over :D.

No_Strings : Everything I've read on the A5/S5 says tilt only. From Edmunds, for example:

"The Audi S5's interior rejects conventional German austerity for a warm, expressive look, and everything feels wonderful. A panoramic sunroof (it tilts up, but the shape of the roof prevents it from sliding open) also brings more light into the interior."

The slope of the rear window and size of the roof means there's nowhere for it to slide. A cab version is due, but that brings its own set of issues.

Some folks won't care but I open mine a lot.

in australia due to high luxury car tax and dealers that pretend the aussie dollar is still 60 cents, the new BMW 135i is about $90k on the road. grey market skylines are much more interesting and cheaper as well. Just no warranty. and ridiculous insurance. And police attention. And thieves. And no financing.

How much would that cost, including the import fees, if you dont mind my asking? I was also under the impression that R34 Skylines werent legal to import anymore due to the fraud fiasco a few years back with that California company doing something illegal when they imported them.

TOPDAWG : I just got a used 2006 Hyundai Accent 4 door sedan last week. Had to say good bye to my 1997 dodge stratus. I'm happy as shit with the new car. It rides great and the gas mileage is killer too. It also has power everything. Also has good power and pick up for a smaller car.

Sorry, I call BS on that one. My wife traded in her 1999 Altima that had around 154k on it, all we had to fix was the alternator. I just traded in a 2002 Altima that had 115k miles on it, only had to do the brakes. I bought an 2008 Altima 3.5 liter, love it.

Jeffrey, try looking at the Altimas. They have more power than the Maxima's did, and were $3000 less.

Agreed. My '03 Altima has 95k miles on it and runs like a champ. Looks mint too. I've only performed the scheduled maintenance so far, cross my fingers.

I'm pretty impressed with the 2.5l engine's pep too. Everyone who has an Accord or Mazda 6 says it's such a better engine than theirs.

For the past several years the only reason the Accord has beaten the Altima is because the Accord has a better ride. That is what is great about Honda, they definitely have that "Honda feel" down. I'm a fan of both and would own either in a heartbeat as a daily driver. I like the Altimas a bit more though.

I have been driving a Nissan since my 2000 Xterra and have never had any service issues.

The 2.5l is a very peppy little engine, I am surprised what they can make that thing do. The '08 Altima's are quite impressive are more like the Maxima's than an Altima. The 3.5l engine really takes off well.

cpayne5 : I just bought a slightly used 2006 Acura TSX. It will be replacing my 2001 Civic (175k miles). I wanted something a little nicer this time, while still being somewhat easy on gas. The TSX fit the bill for me. It is less than two years old, 10k miles, lived its whole life in a garage, and I saved about $10k over a new one.

My next vehicle purchase will probably be some sort of hybrid for my wife in the next year or two.

It's all perspective. But if your insurance premiums would drop $528 a year by switching to another company, you'd jump on it. Same as switching ISPs or TV service providers.

Also, the car getting 20 mpg may require premium fuel such as the Mazdaspeed3 and Mazdaspeed6. That will bump that figure up a couple hundred dollars more.

Then you factor in the cost of everything else going up, including home energy prices, food, products.. it all ads up.

Hopefully my '05 Honda Accord LX will hold up for a few more years (crossed the 50k mark a couple weeks ago- I got it new). It's got some issues (dull clearcoat, bad dash rattles, occasional rattle/squeak coming from the driver's side front door area, check engine light just came on tonight for the first time :huh:). It's been in for a recall item (fuel pump relay) and to fix a map light that was stuck the day I took delivery.

But I like my current Ford so much, I plan to keep it until the wheels fall off. It's only 6 years old and has 77,000 miles. I suspect it's got at least another 10 years of life and 200,000 miles left on it.

Flux capacitors go for about $100. Mr. Fusion home energy unit for another 100 to 200.

Custom wiring harness and tail fins are whatever time and materials you put into it.

Hybrids can be a mix of a mountain bike/comfort bike, roadbike/comfort bike and so on.

Though I thought an electric and some other mix could be interesting.

If I do it will probably be with a Mitsubishi Lancer GTS. Fully loaded for about 21k and better looks than the Mazda 3 which I like.

I miss my Mazdaspeed6. My 2 year lease recently ended on it. But I don't miss the horrendous gas mileage that I used to get because of the potent engine and AWD. I have a spreadsheet showing I was getting 17 mpg in most cases. I used to pay around $50 per fillup more recently.

Mchart : The speed3 is a great car for the price range if you can stand it's styling. I was tempted to get one, but damn.. It really is a fairly ugly car.

I'd question pulling 300HP with N/A upgrades. It's pulling about 260HP allready, and the 'stock' intake is allready quite good. Replacing the filter will make the most difference, but you won't be seeing a drastic enough increase that will allow you to see 300HP. 300HP can be done, but expect to pay a pretty penny.

Mchart : The hyundai genesis coupe when it comes out. Hoping they will put in the V8 used in the Azera as an option. The newer V6 is pushing 306HP, however.

I currently own a 2007 Tiburon GT, which I absolutely love. It is a smooth ride, looks good, and is plenty fast for the price range it's in. However, this new Genesis coupe I can't pass up.

Ill let you know. 20 MPG is an advantage over the 14 city my V6 Explorer is getting, + it can haul my boat and 7 people. I am interested to see how the 2 mode VUE Hybrid does. GM is really shaping up. My Current Highlander Hybrid gets 29 MPG in city traffic.

HFB1217 : I have a 2002 Isuzu Rodeo mid size SUV it gets a solid 20mpg highway. But with $4.00 a gallon on the horizon I will will be looking at a second car most likely a hybrid or a 30+ mpg for my local driving. But something a tad bit larger than a trunk and a glove box on wheels.

Yeah, I agree. If it was my choice I'd turn in the Infiniti and get the Accord now. But you know how that goes! Even though I also agree that the Infiniti is not up to snuff on the Honda it's still a real nice car and in the end I'll have both. And everyone will be happy, so who could ask for anything more! Thanks!

Actually I get about 22 mpg on the Infiniti and get about 33 on my '98 Accord (mostly freeway driving but some in town). I understand that the new Accords do just about as well as mine despite the larger engine and additional weight. Mine's a 4 cyl. and of course that's all I'd get on a new one.

misterjda : I'm holding out for as long as I can. I'm hoping for either:

an AWD or FWD small pickup truck (think 91 Nissan Hardbody size) that gets at least 28 mpg average, or

a diesel or hybrid Honda Element, but without the plastic side panels and carpet on the inside, and getting better gas mileage than the current one.

I'm hoping for something like this because I carry a bicycle to various places for 8-10 months of the year. A truck is perfect for this, but I don't need a V6-powered 4wd because I'm not going offroad. AWD or FWD would be fine for me in the snow I deal with.

Actually, the Subaru Baja was almost perfect, but the bed was too short to be usable for my desired use.

And considering that the Element is probably either going to be discontinued or replaced with the Crossroad, and there probably isn't much market for a FWD pickup, I'll probably get something like a Toyota Matrix or Honda Fit when my Buick bites the dust.

We will most likely be adding a wheelchair capable minivan to the household for my son. My wife's Grand Caravan has been very good to us, so we will probably be going that route again.

dennismurphy : Within the next few weeks, I'll be "acquiring" a Ford Fusion or Taurus... not sure which yet. It's a company car, which is great for me. That will replace my '00 Altima. I figure I should be able to get $2500-3000 or so for it in private sale (105k miles - anyone interested? :)

Next up - I have an '05 Altima 3.5SL that I'd like to replace with a GMC Acadia. I have about $12k left in payments on the 3.5SL, and it appears to me that tradein value on that vehicle is a bit higher than that... So what I may do is trade in the '05 towards an Altima. What's really nice is that my company is a GM Supplier, so I don't have to worry about haggling over price - it is what it is, and I'm happy with that. The only haggling will be over the tradein value of the Altima.

Boomerang86 : My current ride is a 2006 Accord VP, which comes off lease in 14 months. I wanted a Civic instead, but at the time they were selling like hotcakes and couldn't be had without a wait; I needed a car ASAP.

What's next? Honda MIGHT have their new hybrid compact available just in time, but we'll probably get a Civic anyway. We're renting a Prius next month in Florida to get a feel for what a hybrid drives like. Record high gasoline prices has us thinking about a "green" car long term now, and if the Civic GX is still offered we might go for that.

takeahike : I want one of the new Accords so bad I can taste it, but we are in the middle of a lease-buyout of an '06 Infiniti G35 (no, I can't get the Accord instead cause my girlfriend has to have the Infiniti), which means a boatload of cash down and another 3 years of payments. So I guess I'll be driving my '98 Accord (my third one, which just passed 150K without blinking) for a while. Besides (to rationalize this), if I got the new one now I would just run it into the ground with my 70 mile (both ways) commute, so it'd be great if I could retire in a few years and get the new car then and keep it real nice. Anyway, the new model is in its first year of production, so with Honda's recent five year cycle with Accords I've got some time.
