Just curious of experiences in hosting web content on your own servers as opposed to the included SHAW webspace. |

| If you are on a residental customer be aware that you could lose your internet for breaking the AUP.
For the cost of a buisness line from shaw you are just better off getting a cheap hosting account with a 3rd party.
1 megabit upload with shaw vs 100mbit upload with a 3rd party . Which would you rather have host your site. |

Alberta | they can just watch all the incoming http requests to your modem
it is against policy but if you don't abuse your account they wont bother you. If your doing mad torrents and hosting you may get a phone call. |

There are starting to be other legitimate uses for Port 80 and 443 for home users, such as Windows Home Server.
The majority of those users, I would assume, likely don't use huge amounts of traffic, especially since their connection will serve at a max of 1 megabit up. |

| If they're running Windows Home Server, it's largely just over the LAN. Even if you're running a home file server that you access on the road, it's against the AUP. But if you change the config around and keep it on the low, there shouldn't be too many issues. At least, as far as I know yet. |

Don't use port 80. That will really cheese off Shaw and rightly so. You can use any port and use a DNS redirect service such as FreeDNS to make your server appear to be on port 80. As was noted previously running a server of any kind is a violation of your AUP. That said, a little common sense goes a long way. Don't make your server public but, rather, limit access with password protection to only those for whom the server is intended. ie: yourself when travelling. I had a little server running when I was away from home so I could access files I might need and never had the slightest problem. I haven't used it in a couple of years now that I have a 2.5" 40GB portable hard drive in my luggage and a 2 GB pen drive in my shirt pocket. For hosting family photos or whatever there are dozens of free webhosting and photo sharing sites out there that will work much better than running your own. Keep in mind that Shaw has a perfect right to pull the plug on your server and if they warn you take it down immediately without complaint or you will lose your service and you will only have yourself to blame. |

I had a webserver on port 80 on Shaw for 9 years and never had a problem. If they have a problem with it they will contact you and then you can look at other options. |
