[Packet8] Resolution for Packet 8 VOIP through Motorola SBG900

I've seen quite a few posts in several forums regarding dropped calls, timeouts, etc., with this setup, as I've been struggling with the same problem. After trying port forwarding, DMZ enabling, and NAT passthrough for the Uniden router MAC with little or no success, I finally figured out the problem. It has something to do with the gateway always looking for a wireless signal. The only way around it, unfortunately, is to disable ESSID broadcasting and disable the wireless interface...essentially using it as a cable modem instead of a wireless gateway. I'm also disabling the firewall, since it's no longer used wirelessly, and relying on my McAfee suite for inbound/outbound access permissions. You may be able to continue using a firewall and just enable NAT for the Uniden MAC.....haven't tried it yet since it's working fine now. A router on the front end should work just fine as well, but I think the 2 companies need to work out the problem...I didn't buy a gateway to not be able to use it's wireless capabilities as a trade-off for VOIP service. Hope this helps.

Re: [Packet8] Resolution for Packet 8 VOIP through Motorola SBG9

That is very helpful, thank you.
Quite a few modem/router combo units have issues with VoIP, more specifically with packet inspection and it can be quite difficult to disable the functions of the router portion. Sometimes it is easier to just disable the routing functions of these devices competely, and using a secondary or dedicated router.

So I thought I had it figured out, then I started getting dropped calls again. After numerous calls between Packet8 and Motorola, there is, ultimately, no resolution. According to Packet8, it has to do with the fact that, although you can disable the wireless firewall, you can't disable the SPI firewall....the way that it performs packet inspection is what causes the problem, apparently. Interestingly, though, Packet8 says that it isn't an issue with the Linksys gateway which also has an SPI firewall. Likewise, Motorola states that there's no issue with Vonage service (who also use the Uniden VOIP base). Chalk it up to hardware incompatability and neither company is willing to do something about it. Now I have to buy a modem and wireless router and sell my wireless gateway. What a bunch of crap.
