SMCWBR14T-G WAN access problem (Possible Layer 1 problem ?)

Hello !

I have a SMC Router, Model: SMCWBR14T-G EU.

The router functioned very well until a few days ago when we changed the tv and some big speakers position around the house. That day the Internet access through the router went down. I verified the router configuration again, everything was corectly configured. I checked the WAN cable that was plugged into the router's WAN interface and saw that the RJ45 connector was corectly inserted.

After that I pulled off the WAN cable plugged into the router's WAN interface, and put it directly on my laptop and desktop fast ethernet interfaces to see where could be the problem. I could access the Internet with no problem from both my pcs and a friends laptop.

The next step was to check the router in 2 other locations with internet access. The router was working just fine, I could access the Internet from both places(one PPPOE, one Static IP ). So I wondered what could be the problem. I was lucky to have a friend with a router: SMCWBR14-G very similar to mine, a router who was working properly. At my location the second SMC router acted just like mine, It couldn't access the Internet. The LAN is working properly, the wireless module as well, only that I can't get out into the WAN, I couldn't get a ping response from the ISP Gateway.

Afters 3 days of possiblie scenarios and cable replacing I got for 20 seconds Internet access trough my router, after that it went down again.

So, how come 2 routers very similar are working with no problem on other locations and in my location don't ? And how come I can access the Internet from my pcs directly (but without any of these 2 routers)?

I thought maybe It could be a Layer 1 problem. The cable layout installed by my ISP is 1 coax cable, 1 coax cable modem with 2 RJ11 ports and 1 RJ45 fast ethernet port. This cable modem ethernet port is conected to the router RJ45 WAN port with a UTP cable.

I know that the UTP cable is susceptible to RFI and EMI. I bought a ScTP cable(Screened Twisted Pair) to replace the cable modem-router link, but no results.

Any Idea ?

Thank You
