component vs. dvi cable connections

Hi:
I have a digital set top box connected via component cable to 32" lcd high def tv. In addition - via dvi connection have a Sony hd video recorder connected to same tv. Can type of connection (component vs. dvi) have a bearing on whether a digital signal is picked up at tv? All my viewing is via Over The Air through external antenna -.
Local RI station, WSBE (channel 36 OTA) went digital some time ago, and we can receive it via the component hook-up - 36.1 and 36.2 - but - digital signal is not picked up on digital recorder which is connected through dvi cable/? This station is available through the recorder connection - but only in standard definition format (ie. 36 only). Is this due to
The manner of connecting or something specific to the end use devices?

Could be an HDCP problem not allowing you to record the high def channel through the DVI connection.

Just so I understand..

You have a set top box with two outputs, Component and DVI

Component > TV
DVI > HD recorder

You can't receive digital stations via the HD recorder, but can via the Component on TV.

Have you tried seeing if it's a limitation of the set-top box? Do you have the same problem with other digital channels?

First off I'd question exactly how you have it setup. From your post, you are using the set top box as the tuner, then outputing component to the TV, and DVI to the recorder. If this is the case, both the TV and the recorder aren't tuning anything, they would just get whatever channel the set top box is on via a video input. In that situation, if the recorder isn't getting a signal when the set top is tuned to the HD channels, the issue is most likely at the recorder. You could try hooking it up via component, which would get around HDCP issues, but it's a Sony....so you never know what sort of crazy crap is going on.

If you are tuning the station with the recorder:
I would check if you get ANY HD channels on the recorder, or if the issue is isolated to this one channel.

And it could be an HDCP issue, being that it's a Sony device. (my hatred of them when it comes to media rights has no bounds)

It could also be a setup issue in the set top box. They will often output over component or DVI/HDMI, but not both at the same time. Check in the video setup options of the tuner.

Thnks for the replies:
Sorry I was not more clear in describing issue. In effect have two set top boxes working. One - is also a high definition recorder (Sony DHG-HDD500). I have split the incoming over the air signal - feeding one to samsung set top box - and then via component cable to Toshiba L
CD TV. The other leg of over air signal is fed to the Sony tuner of recorder - and then via DVI cable to TV. The question then was why was I able to pick up WSBE a local Rhode Island PBS station 36.1 and 36.2 with the Samsung box but not with the Sony tuner. When scanning for receivable stations using the Sony (recorder) tuner - which has both a standard as well as digital tuner, only show 36 analog. Guess this is really a tuner issue.

More important question is - what am I going to do with the high definition dvr - after complete switch over to digital takes place? This Sony Recorder must receive VBI analog information for time setting and programming guide (tv guide/gemstar electronic program guide) for unit to function. The time on this recorder cannot be set manually.
Unit essentially will not work if there is no provision for this data download. So far no clarification from Sony or TV Guide if there will be some kind of software / firmware
upgrade for recorder. Cannot get a straight answer if digital transmissions will provide data so that these units may continue to be used.

While discussing this - I know vcr's are passe - but their still are an awful lot of them extant - one (or more) extant in my house - are they all going to be useless as well? I sort of like the way it is now. Digital when I want digital and analog when I'm feeling ... anal.

Regards,
Barry

Yep, sounds like the Samsung has a better tuner in it. A booster or simple antenna adjustment may fix it. Also check your splitter and coax cables, make sure they are all in good shape.

I would guess, that this data will still be sent one way or another since many devices use it.

Only option here is a digital tuner box, you will have to remember to set the box to the right channel if you are going to record something while you are sleeping or not home.

Try switching the cables between the two units, just to rule out a cable or splitter issue. Aside from that, it sounds like just a difference in the tuners.

Devices with digital tuners, should be able to update time via a digital signal. As you noted, it may require a firmware update from the vendor. The same would apply to older hardware without digital tuners, the new digital tuner would receive the time (over a digital channel) and forward it.
