| Browsing Issues -Belleville ON
Hey! I have to confess- Im a facebook addict. Im finding latey, Facebook is inaccessible alot of the time. This issue is getting worse, daily. Not just FB, but other sites when I am randomly browsing.I get spinning wheels like the page is trying to load, but nothing ever happens.
I believe it may be a routing issue, something like this happened last year, and it was a complete nightmare. It took months to resolution, and each time I called tech support was like banging my head against the wall. I am loathe to do that again. Im just wondering if anyone else has noticed anything similar (sites not loading/ or itermittantly loadign when browsing, Facebook or otherwise)
I'll just shout out my info: a) What city are you in? Belleville b) What is your operating system? Linux (but other Xp machines in the house have the same issue) c) What is your home network setup? RCA modem (from Cogeco) Linksys router. Another router connected to that (that is for additional wireless only- I am connected to this Linksys directly)
running tracerts to www.facebook.com start showing time outs when hitting Shawcable.net servers (I verified this on another pc as well) Meanwhile, back at the ranch. I can access FB and other sites no problem running through a proxy (ie, not browsing from my cogeco Ip address)
I tried »www.facebookfromschool.com and the Facebook website loads up superfast with no problems. The Ip address I get when surfing to www.ipchicken.com from that proxy site is 67.159.44.24 (Name Address: TE00.techentrance.com)
The same when accessing »www.youhide.com. Through this proxy- Facebook comes up no problem. (browsing from 208.99.78.158)
I am so frustrated with this. I know its not my home network, since its clear it works fine through a proxy) but if I call for assistance, I know from last year A)techs have no idea what IM talking about B) they try to make me take apart my home network-its unsupported, right? I have no problem with that except C) Im running Linux, and I can't imagine Cogeco would help at all with that.
so, not only do I have to take apart my network, I have to drag another pc over here, hook it up, and call them, then commence banging my head against the wall, because I know from my experience with this last year its useless. Last year a tech told me the issue was because my browser was broken.(Last year I was running XP, and troubleshooting directly connected with XP was no less a nightmare) A supervisor told me at one point in the notes from another tech, it claimed I was running through a proxy (I was NOT-total fabrication) and that was the problem. Finally a field tech I called to the house informed me there was a local routing issue (edit-node congestion-sorry!) and it would be fixed after they split the node. It cleared up after the planning maintenace, like he said it would (bless his heart for knowing what he was talking about) but this is after calling 20 times over the period of 2 months, in vain.
Whew. Im done ranting, I suppose. I guess what Id like to do is- assuming I know what Im talking about to some degree, and my browser isn't broken
Is anyone else around here experiencing this extremely frustrating intermittant browsing issue??
Last year I was reduced to installing the Aol browser and using that to browse until the issue was resolved. Please, not that again.... |

Not in the area, and don't frequent those sites in question, but I might recommend you try putting the above information in the contact form via the Cogeco website. Response time with this can really vary, but in my experience you have a better chance of avoiding the "banging your head against the wall" type experience with the person on the other end of the phone. Good luck.

| reply to loveanda45 I don't personally use Facebook so can't comment on whether it's better or worse then normal but I do have quite a few friends that share your addiction and they're pretty quick to tell me when something's not working and I haven't heard a peep from them.
Have you tried connecting a system directly to the cable modem and bypassing all the routers to see if the issue persists? This just helps rule out any home networking issues. Secondly have you tried alternate browsers, cleared cache/cookies, run malware scan? Are you running any other bandwidth intensive applications while trying to browse Facebook? -- you can lead a horse to the water but you cannot make him drink...you can put a man through school but you cannot make him think --ben harper

| reply to MrPink MrPink, that's a screenshot of the "network tools" applet in Gnome, one of the many different desktop environments available for Linux/UNIX systems. The tab he's on is a graphical front-end for the traceroute program on the command line |

looks like the issue was/is the router ep.net router 198.32.176.71
anyway i can get to it fine right now... 208.99.78.158 and 67.157.44.24 go from cogeco through GT to get to those IP's, and not shaw cable (and then ep.net).
