Too often the white hats who do work with FBI or other law enforcement are often disparaged, even in this forum, as being ad hoc "government spies". It's little wonder that they aren't eager to share their information with the public.
Defining all workers who collect and study information for or with the government as "whitehats", who by the cowboy movie definition can do no wrong, is a bit of a stretch I'd say. How much of their effort, collectively, in man hours, is going into studying botnets used for spamming, phishing, identity theft, shutting down websites, etc., compared to how much of their effort, collectively, in man hours, goes into studying the content of domestic phone calls of citizens, preventing disclosure of illegal government surveillance, etc.?

There are people tasked by government with doing some of the wrong things, they're doing them, and they're not whitehats in my view.
However, that is another topic.
Since you got your opinion in on that matter, so did I.

Thanks for making my point - I never defined all workers who collect and study information for the government as whitehats, but you stretched it out to that in your response.

Your response is exactly what I was referring to - dumping the whitehats who, often as volunteers and on their own nickel, work with the FBI or other law enforcement into the same pot as those who abuse the powers given them.

Edit - I'll also add that the colleagues I know from the private sector who work with in the area have never spent a second or a penny "studying the content of domestic phone calls of citizens, preventing disclosure of illegal government surveillance, etc".

I wouldn't mind purchasing some points - but who is and how would I donate them to the site owner? This whole business is disgusting, altho if you weren't doing such a good job with help and education, you probably wouldn't be on someone's list.

I appreciate very much the support but please save your money there isn't any financial loss or deficit from this incident at least not one that I care about and in some ways I'm having a good time down in the engine room.

I was long over due in showing my appreciation and support to dslreports. The recent problems reminded me of all the things I've learned on these forums so I did what I felt needed to be done.

Thanks!

Last evening I looked up the IP for DSLR to try, and noticed a
strange entry in the query response -- the location:

Initiating server query ...
Looking up IP address for domain: dslreports.com
The IP address for the domain is: 209.123.109.180
….
The server returned the following response headers:

Date: Fri, 18 Apr 2008 20:22:55 GMT

Location: hxxp://www.dslreports.com?ddos=1

Query complete.

Any idea what this means, and why it would be included in an IP query?

If anyone has purchased toolpoints and they are not credited properly please let me know. With the instability of the site some of the auto crediting has been off - I am doing my best to keep an eye on them but don't hesitate to let me know if anyone needs a wand waved.

it was (is) some redirection chicanery to mitigate the attack.

Good move! Looks like you have had to block a few nets. FYI I am on a VZ DSL connection currently at 141.157.230.7. I can not connect to dslr via that IP, so am using TOR.

TOR is an option for users on blocked networks.

I'm only blocking IPs and most are eliminated now. Your IP isn't on it. Are you behind a proxy server with stale pages or something? I don't see why you can't connect. What does www.dslreports.com resolve to for your local DNS?
