Re: why do i get this error

Did you put the file in a directory that the webserver can read? If so, make sure the permissions are such that the webserver can read the file.

Where is the file located in the directory structure? Sounds like it may be below the webserver document root. Is there something like a public_html directory when you ftp to the server?

no idea what you mean, the folder this file is in has several other files in it that are all accessible through http. there are 4 dmg files about 3gigs each, these are the only ones that give me a problem like this

I agree with state See Profile, where is the file actually located. Also, don't make the file 777, make it 666 at most. 777 could potentially allow someone to try and execute the file.

What type of file is it?

Check any 'hotlink protection' the web server may offer settings for. We had an issue with a server running Plesk where we could not access any images directly, and neither could some of our Flash applications, due to this hotlink protection...

edit: also, if it's a Win2003 server, it can be very restrictive about what files it will serve-up if there are not MIME Type entries for those files (seems rather random though).

Are there any spaces or punctuation in the filename? If you're typing in the URL, you'll need to encode them. See this page for more information: »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Percent-encoding
