| reply to staijo Re: speed factory seems to be no more....
I suspected this was more than just a normal outage when their site didn't come back up and I was getting the "all circuits busy message when calling them". I just got off the phone with Charter (shudder). Looks like I will get double the bandwidth for the same price with static IP. Reliability will probably suck, but luckily I moved my sites to hostgator
Even if they do come up after this, it appears that someone seriously dropped the ball or left someone else holding the bag...
Is it a coincidence that they were acquired 2 years ago today (to the day) according to this link?

| reply to staijo Hey guys, I'm an IT techie who checked out things - it appears to be an upstream carrier outage that speedfactory is working to fix.
Am able to get IP address from speedfactory's RAS server. Also speedfactory's DNS & FTP servers are active (but DNS not able to resolve external addresses). Also speedfactory's mail server is up, but cannot send to anyone but other speedfactory email addresses due to lack of external DNS resolution.
By all appearances they have lost their connection to their backbone provider, but it appears all internal speedfactory servers/services are still active.
FIX IT!!! |

| reply to Shopping for DSL Regarding Atlanta static IPs... If you are close to a CO, SpeakEasy.net. They don't do any remote DSLAMs.
I also talked with Milton at Net2Atlanta.com earlier and they offer them. Actually, he's driving over to Speed Factory's office now, so maybe some of you can meet him. |

I have a feeling that Atlanta area DSL/Cable installers are going to be very busy next week hooking up all the new ex-SpeedFactory users. |

If it was just an upstream carrier issue, then we'd just see timeouts or TTL expireds on the pings and traceroutes.
The BGP information has been withdrawn from the 'internet.
These guys are toast.
And.. if it was just a carrier problem why are the doors locked at their Atlanta offices? |

And.. if it was just a carrier problem why are the doors locked at their Atlanta offices? I agree. Their local RAS dialup, mail servers, and internal DNS resolution has nothing to do with their connection to the rest of the world. The locked doors and lack of phone service cinches it for me. I told the sales guy I just talked to that they will probably get a lot of calls next week for new subscribers.
It does suck though, I had been with SF for 5-7 years now with no major complaints... |

| I don't know enough about BGP to know if it's subject to time outs or requires manual intervention to 'pull' it from routing tables, but the whole locked door/no anwsering machine thing doesn't bode well as it's clear whatever is going on was clearly telegraphed to the rank/file speedfactory staff.. Anyone hear anything about Verizon's fios coming to atlanta anytime soon? |

The network is down and will be back on line soon.
We are working diligently to get back on line tonight. Sit tight the network will be up soon and we ARE still in business.

| reply to krushgroove I noticed the same thing, been off line since then, i can get to SF's router, but beyond that, nothing.
I actually am still online because i have a bellsouth DSL direct line for regular browsing and downloading, SF' is my server one. I ordered the DSL direct the day of my last posting regarding and outage, works great, can't complain and I use diff dns servers so all I need is ip transport with bell does beautifully.
I have been trying to find another ISP that would do DSL direct residential for Bell lines, but no dice so far so i can go totally voip, and transition my server's over. |

Look at »www.net2atlanta.com. Yes, my site is ugly, but we're about functionality, not beauty.
We're small, near the Big Chicken, and we do DSL including IFITL as well as T1, FastFiber and server colo. We're also multihomed.
When I searched, it looked like SpeedFactory was only connected via Paetec/USLEC. So, maybe there's a dispute there or something and they're not really out of business. |

Your right, only 1 upstream and that's USLEC, either they messed up the Core router, or USLEC plainly cut them off because someone didn't pay the bill. |

We are working diligently to get back on line tonight. Sit tight the network will be up soon and we ARE still in business. So explain WHY you couldn't forward your support phone number to a working line or call center so that your customers could communicate with you? Heck, in emergencies, we have even forwarded lines to cell phones. Even a note posted on the door of your offices would have been better than nothing.
Also, how hard is it to redirect your DNS for speedfactory.net or speedfactory.com to a temporary working site (even if just one page) so that you could communicate the situation to your customers? This should have been able to be done in a matter of minutes.
Outages happen, but this lack of communication and response is totally unacceptable. I have been a loyal customer for the past 5-7 years and have referred many friends to SF during that time. I have experienced outages, but nothing like this where there was no communication at all and no explanation. |

·CYBERONIC INTERNET..
| reply to staijo This is really crazy, no answer, no reply and we are paying for business class service. We rely on our connection for our business for credit card transactions and monitoring. The company that I work has several locations with other providers and no one treated us like this. I called to one our other ISP providers, Cyberonic, today and they are going to overnight a Wireless box with IP so we can get our VPN up. |

1 edit | reply to staijo Taken from NextPhase's most recent 10QSB/A filing with the SEC (4Q2007):
The Company anticipates its current cash reserves, plus its expected generation of cash from existing operations and new short-term borrowings, will only be sufficient to fund its anticipated operations through the 1st quarter of 2008 . Consequently, the Company will need to raise additional debt and/or equity capital in order to finance its business plan and needs for working capital. Such financing(s), if available, may increase the risk of the Company not being able to service its debt obligations, and/or cause dilution to existing equity holders. The accompanying unaudited condensed consolidated financial statements do not include any adjustments to reflect the possible future effects on the recoverability and classification of assets and liabilities that might result from the outcome of this uncertainty.
Plus there's lots of other painful stuff about their maxed-out credit cards, a loan secured by the former chairman for a $50K company vehicle, etc. Just a guess, I think they missed payments to their upstream. Dave |

1 edit | reply to staijo all I can say is THANK GOD FOR DSLREPORTS. If not for these forums, I'd still have no idea what was going on with my internet connection.
I'm gonna give SF the benefit of the doubt on this and give them though the weekend to get their stuff together (for no other reason than an assumed company rep at least posted something here. I'd imagine if they had completely closed up shop, there would be no interest in hanging onto customers), but after that, I'll probably have to go with Bellsouth. |

Sorry for the headaches we caused. We will make adjustments for our customers going forward.
As of this evening at 8: EST we have a small percentage of customers back on line. We are working to bring up the rest.
Again our apologies for the problem.

Because our lines are VoIP Thanks for taking the time to post. I know what it is like to be under the gun, but even VoIP numbers can normally be forwarded using RCF with the provider. Toll-free (800/866) numbers can also be redirected to any land-line based on my experience in VoIP providers (i.e. CBeyond). I at least hope everyone learns something from this moving forward. Communication is key. I bet most customers would be fine if they simply knew what was going on. |
