| what we need is faster upstream connections I'll agree that 5/10Mbit/sec for the vast majority of users is currently more than enough on the downstream side, at least until we start wanting to stream HD content like many folks now stream internet radio. That said however, something needs to be done about the crazily slow upstream speeds residential ISP's give their users. With users wanting to upload videos to Youtube, or even performing online backups as I do, it's much quicker to perform such tasks if we're not stuck at 384kbps or 512kbps upload. Cable and DSL technology commonly in use today can provide at least 1mbps of connectivity on upload, so why not at least have it as an option for those wanting it? This I wonder about especially for DSL providers. Verizon's 768k upload package is actually provisioned at 864k to allow for overhead, yet AT&T only provissions at 768k. Why can't they both have an option to go as fast as the line will allow should the customer wish it? That's my thoughts. | | Mele20Premium join:2001-06-05 Hilo, HI kudos:4 1 edit | said by kd6cae: That said however, something needs to be done about the crazily slow upstream speeds residential ISP's give their users. Oceanic Time Warner Road Runner gave us a FREE upgrade from 384kbps upload speed to 1mbps upload speed last year.
Download is still at 5mbps for the standard plan. We got the increase in the upload because of competition from HawaiianTelcom which first announced that they were upgrading their DSL customers to 1ms down. Oceanic had to match it otherwise their ads about being the fastest broadban in Hawaii would be a lie. Plus, because HawTel had announced 11/1 speeds, Oceanic had to create something higher than Turbo at 8/1 so they announced RR Extreme at 15/1 but so far only a tiny area of Oahu can get it and it costs $25 a month more than Standard tier and $15 a month more than Turbo.
It is clear that competition is the ONLY reason that TW ever gets off its duff to offer any better speeds. There has been mention of TW and AT&T possibly going the way of the dodo like AOL. Sure, very likely with TW. They don't learn from their mistakes (like AOL).
Edit: I should add that periodically, every time the ping to the RDC at Orange is lowered from average 78ms to 50ms, I get Turbo speeds. So, it would be very easy for Oceanic to upgrade Standard tier to 8mbps down and Turbo to 10. -- "The same ferocity that our founders devoted to protect the freedom and independence of the press is now appropriate for our defense of the freedom of the internet.
