Interesting

Even though this is a very preliminary type offer, I wonder who will match the 4.7 billion offered by the gov't?
I also wonder what kind of "ownership" the Australian gov't would retain?

Remember then President Clintons 1997 "40mbps to the home by 2007"

The expected bidders are:
A consortium of nine firms led by Optus, owned by Singapore Telecommunications, and the former government monopoly Telstra Corp Ltd are expected to bid.

Re: Interesting

I live in australia for a couple years. They'll probably give that kind of speed to the home. Then give you a ridiculous bandwidth cap with very high cost when you go over that limit.

Yeah, pretty much. I'm in Sydney right now, and they are fucking insane on the caps, prices and overage fees.

$30 for 200MB
$40 for 400MB
$60 for 12GB

It's basically a big joke. Needless to say I now use surf the channel exclusively to download all my shows and I only download at itet cafes.

Making people pay more money for more usage and less money for less usage? Crazy.

1. Usage means monthly combined upload and download data transfer 1 Gigabyte = 1000 Megabytes. Additional usage charged at $0.15/MB.
I had to read this a few times before I could believe it.

That's right people, $150/GB over-usage fee.

OUCH!

Re: Interesting

$150/GB???!??!!!!

Why don't they have the bandwidth? It seems like Australia's only link off the continent is a T3 line. I recommend they add capacity the "green" way »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_over_Avian_Carriers

Which is why you shouldn't use Bigpond full stop, they count uploads and downloads as one. Not that I'm nick picking. As for an updated network, we are still awaiting digital TV and ADSL2+ where I'm at, and I can't see any change in the near future. 8 billion or not, most of it hits the big cities, and draft meetings at the local 5 star.
