| Close laptop lid -> standby. Open laptop lid -> unstandby???
I don't know if this is possible under XP, as it is in Vista. When I close the lid of my laptop it immediately goes into standby. When it opens, I want it to come out of standby without me hitting a wakeup button or key... anyone know if this is this possible? |

| I would imagine so. Now, if this is a Vista-pre-installed notebook, beware that it is not always a simple matter finding all the appropriate XP drivers. This is a model-by-model thing...some easy, some not so, I recommend if you are changing to XP, make sure that you can find all the appropriate hardware drivers for XP that you need before commencing. -- ...something is happening here but you don't know what it is...do you, Mr. Jones? |

I'm directly asking how I can do this, or if I absolutely can't do this, not whether or not I can maybe do it. |

Thanks! |

Wasn't a lot of info to go on, such as what make/model is involved?
My HP will come out of a standby mode upon opening the lid, it would not matter if it were in Vista or XP. -- ...something is happening here but you don't know what it is...do you, Mr. Jones? |

| No model, I'm asking if XP can do this. Reg key, third party software, whatever... It's more of a Yes / no / here's how kind of question.
Here, I'll make it easy...
Question: Can Windows XP come out of standby on a laptop when you open the lid, without hitting a button?
(A) No.
(B) Yes. You have to __________.
(C) Yes, with third party software called ___________.
(D) Yes, but you need specific drivers that match up with the chassis. |

| Here then...I'll make it easy...it can, but that may be hardware-dependent, as with so many other windows functions, which was exactly why I asked which make/model. -- ...something is happening here but you don't know what it is...do you, Mr. Jones? |

| ... that's not making it easy. So you're suggesting (D)?
Okay. I figured that as well from my googling, and looking at a few laptops here. Logically I'm not sure how Windows gets the notification that you've opened the lid that wakes it from standby... if that's a PME or you need a piece of software to receive a proprietary event. |

| The hardware (usually micro switch beneath lid latches) tells the software to either go into standby mode or wake up out of it. However as previously suggested it depends on make and model as to whether the switch is wired for both options and if so then the required drivers could be installed to enable it.
But to be able to answer YES or NO to the original question, then the make and model is a requirement. -- If you cant fix it, then find something you can. If you cant find something then break something. |

| reply to urbanriot My Toshiba laptop with XP automatically restarts when I open the lid.
EDIT: I suspect the answer to your question is "B", but I don't know what to put in the blank. I'll poke around my laptop settings tonight. I'm sure it's there somewhere. |

| reply to urbanriot Are you running on AC power or battery power? With my computer, it makes a difference when opening the lid:
said by Toshiba : Starting again from Standby mode
Use these instructions to restart the computer when you enter Standby mode by closing the display panel:
• AC power. Open the display panel.
• Battery power. Open the display panel and press the power button until the on/off light changes to green.
The computer returns to the screen you were previously using.

I found a colleague with a Sony that had the feature... backed up his data and reformatted. And without the necessary drivers installed, this feature wasn't available.
So that pretty much answers my question, that it's not an inherent ability within Windows to support, unless a manufacturer creates a specific driver package to do it.
Thanks for the responses though. |

If there is a option for closing of the lid there is a option for OPENING the lid. BTW My Dell has this ability. |

Actually I made the mistake of the option button on my Dell as opening lid. But if you set the "when I close the lid" to standby it wakes up when you open it. |
