Actually I made the mistake of the option button on my Dell as opening lid. But if you set the "when I close the lid" to standby it wakes up when you open it.
Mine doesn't.
I have to hit a key to wake it back up. :hmm:

My question was about opening the lid, and not closing it.

I found a colleague with a Sony that had the feature... backed up his data and reformatted. And without the necessary drivers installed, this feature wasn't available.

So that pretty much answers my question, that it's not an inherent ability within Windows to support, unless a manufacturer creates a specific driver package to do it.

However as previously suggested it depends on make and model as to whether the switch is wired for both options and if so then the required drivers could be installed to enable it.

Yes, I got the impression based on your initial post, that you were speculating that if you switched from Vista to XP, would this feature still work?

Wasn't a lot of info to go on, such as what make/model is involved?

My HP will come out of a standby mode upon opening the lid, it would not matter if it were in Vista or XP.

Now, if this is a Vista-pre-installed notebook, beware that it is not always a simple matter finding all the appropriate XP drivers. This is a model-by-model thing...some easy, some not so, I recommend if you are changing to XP, make sure that you can find all the appropriate hardware drivers for XP that you need before commencing.
