nycityny : So I ordered last week through drugstore.com which started collecting the tax. The thing is, many of the products they sell are not taxable in New York, like non-prescription medicines, remedies and vitamins. Sure enough, they charged me tax on those items. I e-mailed them and asked for a credit. They immediately credited me. How many other folks are going to get wrongly taxed on nontaxable items?

They estimate that compliance was between 4-8% on tax returns. So 92-94% of people were not paying anyway. There really was and still is not anyway to enforce this. This state does not have the manpower needed to do so.

The fact is people will not start shopping locally if they can get discounts online. I sure won't. Now I will look to other etailers like Buy.com, and many others that don't take the tax still. Newegg stands to lose a lot of business and I seriously doubt local retailers will see any increase in business. So at a time when the economic powers that be tell us to spend more because that will help the overall economy, stuff like this has a chilling effect. Especially if this expands to all the big online retailers.

I will shop elsewhere online and avoid the tax. Most I am sure will also try to do the same. So Newegg must know they are getting screwed.

good for ebaY, bad for Amazon

Packeteers : If Amazon caves and collects NY City/State sales taxes, all those secondary sellers who offer the same item on Amazon new or used will scatter, and go to ebaY. States can only afford to go after the largest online sellers, because going after every little seller on the web and trying to collect out of State taxes on their sales would be a logistical nightmare, and raise far more administrative costs than the the taxes collected themselves would justify. So you'll still be able to get plenty of tax free bargains online, just from smaller more specialized resellers.
Ultimately, America will have to move to a National VAT like the system used in Europe, if they ever hope to collect out of State taxes effectively. Hopefully by then there will be a flat tax as well, instead of our current system which only creates jobs for accountants and tax attorneys to get high earners out of their full tax obligations. While we won't like it, a consumption tax aka VAT system may also be favored since it will force American's to slow consumption and increase savings - something we sorely need to do despite the short term economic consequences.

There's better selection and the time and money saved not having to run all over town. With the rates some sites charge for delivery, we may soon find ourselves paying for the convenience of shopping online.

I don't think Albany cares one way or another about "leveling the playing field." The reason the economy boomed after the internet became popular a few years back is because of the cheap prices on the net... These types of laws will just make the economy sag a little more. People are still going to find it cheaper to buy online since the prices are usually cheaper when the retailer doesn't have to pay brick and mortar expenses.. So basically the people of NY get screwed out of more of their hard earned cash, and the local retailers might see a small rise in sales, but overall, people will still keep buying on the net, just at an increased price... :uhh:

-Tzale
--
Neoconservatives (G.W.B) are not true conservatives.
