Does anyone know what modems are compatible with Shaw?
I've given up on the surfboard, it's giving me trouble.
Thanks! -- ~~Desu |

| Having no idea what model Surfboard modem we are discussing, or what part of Canada you are in makes this almost impossible. Generally any DOCSIS 2.0 modem should work with Shaw service. Call Shaw and find out what the recommended modem is for your area. Also it is possible that Shaw has upgraded your area recently and they may do a free modem swap for you even if you own the modem. They swapped my modem for me a few months back after some local upgrades(I now have a SB5102). -- Faster, faster until the thrill of speed overcomes the fear of death. - Speedfreaks' Motto The Long Run by Daniel Keys Moran |

Basically I need to buy a modem from another company. -- ~~Desu |

| any docsis 2 should work although unless their policy has changed since i worked there you need to use a cybersurf(out dated), Teryon(sp?)(only in some ares and out dated) or the Motorola Surfboard 5101 and 5102. incase im missing one...Any other modem Shaw offers that you buy somewhere else should work, but if you buy some modem they dont offer they wont put it on their network.
Shaw will also most likely be picking up the 6101 soon unless they go with a different brand for docsis 3 |

| perhaps you should keep bugging Shaw then, they may be able to fix your problem. You havn't said what your issue is so we cant really offer you other suggestions. or are you talking about that file planet thread? |

| My speeds get capped at 200k from FP (i'm a subscriber, normally I max out my modem) and the speeds fluctuate from nothing to 200k constantly. Initial download speed can be as high as 900k but then it drops down to nothing.
There are other people with the same issues via a google search. -- ~~Desu |

| reply to lucky644 Unless things have changed recently Shaw will not allow any modem other than what they already use on thier cable plant. The reason being they control the firmware and alot of other paramters within the modem, which they may not be able to do if you use a different modem. |

| reply to lucky644 I would say the answer AnonShawUser gave you in your other thread is the most help you can expect. Bottom line, if it's a not one of the modems cableguy84 listed above you're almost definitely going to get service from Shaw. Given that I'd either look for a refund from FilePlanet or get another ISP.
I find it surprising that FP isn't able to work out the problem but as they themselves have said it's something in their data transfer protocol. To me it's up to them (or whoever their hardware provider is) to work with existing hardware (Surfboards have been around for several years now).
Of course you could always start a third thread on the same topic and see if you get a different answer... |

Second was regarding whether there was a workaround for the motorola, in the motorola forum.
Last was, upon learning it was indeed a known issue, and there wasn't a workaround, to find out what other modems might be available. -- ~~Desu |

| reply to lucky644 There are no other modems available. Just the Moto DOCSIS modems. Even though other modems are technically compatible with Shaw's system they will not allow them onto their network. All modems have to be added to a master inventory list and at this time these modems are shipped directly to Shaw from the vendor. |

I understand you have questions, but you posted two threads within a few hours - both to the Shaw forum - about essentially the same thing: that you have been having problems with your Shaw Motorola modem not working with File Planet.
I hope you get the problem solved. Maybe the newer 5102 Surfboards will solve the problem, but as you said yourself all Surfboard modems appear to be affected. It sounds like the problem isn't with Motorola but with File Planet. |

| reply to lucky644 If the 5102 doesn't work, there's nothing I can do, FilePlanet isn't going to change their ways for an obscure problem. And I'm not going to stop subscribing because speed isn't the only thing I pay for -- ~~Desu |
