In installing an adapter, make sure that you will install it with the correct driver, for it to work properly. Most of the adapters now needs the software to be installed first before connecting the adapter itself on the computer. Then after installing the adapter's driver/software, it needs to be configured with the same SSID and wireless security mode/key of the router. If everything is correct, the wireless connection status should be connected and you should be able to go online.
Amen! In fact, I just finished repairing a wireless network adapter install gone wonky for exactly that reason (user was running Vista, but managed to install the XP driver and software). I have installed the Linksys W. Notebook Adapter ver. 1.2 with a 3. something driver to it. My Laptop is connecting to the network but is only sending between 3-6 packages, whilst not receiving anything. So I am perfectly connected but can´t go on the internet and am not receiving anything. when checking the properties of the Adapter, it says: MISSING THE ASSOCIATION WITH AP what the h. does that mean?
