| Primus DSL, uncapped and unthrottled?
I am looking for a new ISP with all this Bell bs thats been going on lately.
I spoke with Primus today, they said they are uncapped, but some customers are throttled at the moment. They did say they were going to have the throttling fixed by the end of the month. They also said they are not on Bell's network.
Can anyone with Primus DSL confirm this?
Thanks |

| I have been with Primus for about 2 years and luckily have not been affected by the recent Bell throttling, however I know that about 1 year ago I was switched from Bell equipment to Primus equipment because I was having issues with my DSL and found the issue to be a bad port. I don't know why some people are throttled and some not, but it might be because Primus uses alot of their own equipment unlike other ISP resellers. |

If so, then yes throttling will not affect you because the only thing Bell controls in that case is the physical copper line. |

Hope this helps. |

@teksavvy.com | reply to Icetoad Hmm, well the guy at Primus that I spoke with today said they would have the throttle issue fixed by the end of the month. Maybe I should try talking to a higher up to confirm this. |

| reply to Icetoad Hmm, any other Primus customers wanna chime in?
I did already speak with a couple Indians, which is always slightly harder than speaking to someone with a north american accent.
My issue is I am just am too impatient to wait out the litigation or political debate to occur to rectify the Bell+wholesaler throttle issue. |

| reply to Icetoad A good friend of mine was on Primus here in Brantford for a few months.. they capped her at 50kbps download at all times of the day, and this was before the universal throttle. When asked about it, all they would say is "We don't throttle"..well, they sure did.. non stop 24/7. Stay away from Primus. |

| reply to Icetoad primus has taken a serious hit in both PR and sales for quite a while now... seems like they are making major moves on the infrastructure end to curb the bad press they've been getting over the last... little (long) while.
hopefully it's just not hot air.
either way, with all the acquisitions primus has made over the last couple of years, it's probably one of the very few (if not the only) 3rd party provider that has the financial ability to build an almost completely separate network (primus DSLAMS are popping up more and more).
this is kind of like choosing between the lesser of 2 (or 3) evils.
and primus does not throttle. for those who have been getting "throttled" (before the bell fiasco), it's probably related to sync. and there are definitely no caps.
i've been with primus for about a year now. they've generally good, though there's been room for improvement... i'm willing to hold out a little more since it does sound like they are working on really fixing things up. |

| reply to Icetoad I hate to say this but Primus has been really great for me. You're only going to get throttled if you are on a Bell DSLAM. Bell is doing that to everyone and it's beyond Primus control so it's not their fault. At least with Primus they CAN be unthrottled if you're lucky to be on GCC equipment.
You only get the east indian call centre SOMETIMES. About a 1 in 3 chance. They also have a call centre in New Brunswick and Toronto. If you get an east indian guy, just hang up and dial again.
What other ISP besides Bell even offers "up to" 7 megs? I have a very good line and I'm getting the full 7 megs. I hit over 600 kb/s on a single torrent last night!! Also if you're on the GCC equipment, I think most of it is ADSL2 capable. Some of us have been lucky enough to be on ADSL2 transmission modes. I manage to convince a tech to put me onto it as they are freely testing it out. However I'm still "capped" at 7 megs. Originally when I got switched to GCC because of the Primus bundle I was seeing 14 megs!! But I couldn't log on before they fixed their "mistake".
Aside from the customer service, no other ISP even has the capability to be "competitive" with Bell. |

Thanks I am in Woodstock and yes, Primus has no caps. Not having a DSLAM where I am (I think hell will freeze over first) means I am throttled. |

| reply to Icetoad I've been with Primus since this past September. We originally had a hell of a time getting everything set up and we suffered severely limited service for the first month or so. Primus was great about the whole thing though, frequently crediting us for half of our monthly bill. Eventually they sent a Bell tech out to our house at no charge to rewire our demarcation point and test our physical line. Everything has been smooth since.
I'm located in Hamilton. Primus said that I was going to be switched over to their new central office some time in late 2007, so I think I'm free from Bell. Because of the physical quality of my copper, I only get about 5mbit down, which is more than enough for me, frequenly hitting 650k/s down and 80k/s up.

| reply to Icetoad One in three is about right for the call centers. For every 3rd call I get someone French instead. Little easier to work with but all 1st Level techs are retarded regardless of where they're from.
Primus on a Bell DSLAM you will get the same story as everyone else. If your on a Primus DSLAM maybe you'll get lucky. They still have their own network problems which are 50/50 if they've really fixed them.
I've been on Primus for 6 months. Near the end of the 6 months they really started picking up. Then I moved and it was 2 weeks of "please wait for your cd or your internet won't work". |

| How things are today.... I have a ticket open with Primus tech support and was told 5-7 days for an update. Also Primus tech support is reporting that there is no known speed problems. When I first got the service in December it was hooked up with no problems and all speed tests were over 5000k down. Any case I will let there tech support work through the ticket and give them a chance to resolve it. If not TSI here I come.

@teksavvy.com | reply to Icetoad I guess its a mixed bag with Primus then. Obviously the customer service is lacking moderately/heavily, but there seem to be a few customers that are happily getting full speed and no throttling. |
