Dish has by far a better DVR service. DirecTV does have a larger HD selection but that seems to be less of a factor as all the major channels are going HD anyway. And Dish tends to be cheaper but not by much. DirecTV offers field testing of software for their advanced receivers, which usually bring all the good stuff like DirecTV OnDemand (which uses a network connection)and soon Multi Room Viewing (also via networking).

Also DirecTV has media sharing with PC's AND will have PC Playback within the year for its HD DVR's.

Basically every cool feature D* has involves its HD DVR's. DTV caters to the sports fan more than Dish. Dish is more notorious for cutting off channels when disputes arise between them and the provider. As for HD content, DTV has the edge there AFAIK. Pricewise, they are about the same withing a few dollars.
