While the graphics may be simplistic, gameplay is definately unaffected by the ability (or inability) for a console to render jaw-dropping graphics. Simple-yet-amazing games like SSB:Brawl, Wii sports, etc. are testaments to this. I admit that the graphics do suck compared to computers, Melee & Brawl have racked up more enjoyable play hours than 90% of the PC games I've bought.

Hell, go play The Godfather: Blackhand, one of the first "lulz" games I chalked up a good amount of hours on. The graphics were lackluster, gameplay kinda meh, but it was a 1920's GTA that incorporated the Wii controls flawlessly (in my opinion). A-many a stressful afternoons were blown off by doing overhand-smashes to random passerbys on the virtual street. :D

I mean, damn...try and find me a PC game that lets you throttle people annoying NPC buggers with corresponding tactile input. Or play baseball with actual bat-swinging motion. Because people are moving to consoles. I know I play on my Wii a lot more these days because they are guaranteed to run fast and I don't need a £350 graphics card and a quad core to do it.

You do, of course, realize that both the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3 are multicore systems with expensive video cards right? So, in fact, you do need a multicore system with a big bad video card to game, its just that the compnay making it is eating most of the cost. The only differnece is that when my PC graphics or processor need upgrading, I can do it. Hell with the price of consoles today, its not much more to get that multicore pc with the nice video card. Oh, and just for the reccord, I have all 3 consoles and a quad core gaming PC with a top of the line video card so I aint speakin out my ass on this. :D

There is probably less strategy involved in a deathmatch style game like that but in counter-strike type game (which actually has a bit of realism, or tries to) there is alot of strategy involved, especially if you are trying to compete. There again though, don't expect to join a CS server for the first time or for just 20 minutes a day and expect to do any good. After a game has been out as long as CS there tends to be ALOT of good players running around. Not only is it a very fun game to play, its free and it runs on crappy systems. They are still putting out runescape type games that run right in your web browser, top down 2d gaming with graphics a C64 could support.

You can find the same quality games for PC there's just more crap to sift through.

I've been content the past several years. I've never wanted for a game to play on my PC, there is always something out or coming out that I'm looking forward to playing. Games companies are obsessed with making a game look life-like with no consideration of gameplay.

Go try Wii sports, a very basic game with VERY basic graphics. But the gameplay is fantastic... you don't even notice the player sprites are basically little triangles with balls for heads because you are so locked into the gameplay.

I also agree in the area of FPS there have been a lot of lame releases out, but I don't know how groundbreaking you can get with an FPS. Go back and play wolfenstein then doom, besides weapons do they play all that differently? Hexxen continued with the same gameplay different weapons. I mean its a first person shooter, how much can you add to it? Physics and Weapons and better environments, you're always going to be running around shooting stuff, thats the point.

But you got Half life2 plus its chapters and mods (Counter-strike, TF2, Portal, etc.), Doom3, the newer unreal games, Crysis. There's always going to be crap getting released, did you ever hear about extreme paintbrawl? 1998 release, scored like 1.7/10 on gamespot.

I also think companies like EA are ruining PC games because they are more worried about money and putting out buggy releases, on the flip side of that you got Ubisoft who I've been really happy with. Rainbow Six is a great series, I was a big fan of ALL of the splinter cell games, heroes of might and magic, ghost recon, etc. etc.

And while I'm sure EA has issues releasing buggy games, they also usually update it and fix it eventually.

I just dont' see how pc gaming can be dying, yes there is more crap to sift through now just because there are more companies making games now than in 1980. Yup I'm 41 and started PC gaming on Wolfenstein 3-D :) Moving on to classics like Doom and Duke Nukem.

At the moment the "IN" game is Cod 4 although TBH it isn't very good at all. Activision have made it for the "Kiddy" audience e.g. very small maps all spawning right next to each other. So you get a server full of headless chickens who are running around getting 50 kills but dying 100 times. Cod UO was far superior. In Cod4 its almost impossible to make your own mods (you can but that stupid ranking system resets) and no one wants to play on a server that resets your rank to 1 and then you have very limited weapon choice.

Theres also the trend with the "kids" at the moment to call you a "camper" if you get more than 2 kills in a row without moving. This isn't hard either all you have to do is find a corner and sit there watching all the headless chickens running past and picking them off. I thought staying alive was the point!!!

PC gaming is dying. Due to software houses producing games look great but play like cr*p. e.g. When you look at a brick on a wall you can see beautiful textures that look so life-like... but its runs at 5fps and the actual gameplay is boring.

SOF2, Cod UO are classics, everything went downhill from there.

If I was ask to choose the most fun console I would say the Wii, I've been playing Wii Sport since it came out and I have not found it boring since. Comparing it to my 20 titles of 360 games which are all covered in dust as well as the system. The PS3 IMO is a slight better than the 360 but the game's are doo doo because of the controller, which is doo doo.

What I love about PC gaming is the option that it gives the person. It gives me the option to upgrade or just wait for it, and it's not just from one source your buying the hardwares from. It gives you that control of what you want in your system and knowing what it can and cannot do. That comfort cannot be duplicated with consoles. Most importantly the control. It is superior compared to controllers. Movements and accuracy are just a lot better. They feel better. FPS and MMO works best this way.

Hopefully in the future more people like myself will return to gaming on PC, because their are games like SC2, Warhammer, AION and others that I hope will bring back PC from this "pause" period. Haven't bumped into it yet in my console career. Well, I take it back, I ran into some in Assassin's Creed...however, that was because I chose to opt out of the auto-update that popped up when I stuck the disc in.

I understand how you feel, I felt that way around 2004/2005 when gaming was semi-stale. With the advance of new technologies we are seeing new heights in gaming. DX10, new and more powerful GPU's, CPU's, etc. Gaming is really taking off these days. Sure... the titles may be the same rehash over and over but we are seeing some new and interesting titles coming our way. Be it RTS, FPS, Adventure, MMORPG, MMOFPS, MMOSimulation, new games are always coming out and new developers are always coming into the market with fresh ideas.

As for the OP. I haven't played BG2142 in a long while. I think most have either went back to BF2 or jumped to COD4. I myself prefer BF2 over BF2142. BF2142 didn't really do it for me, while it was a great game the sci-fi of it wasn't enough... I needed more :)

Er...sorry that not everyone gets off on the same games. I'd have to agree with him in that FarCry really didn't get my rocks off. Maybe its our "bad taste", or whatever, but it still is our $$$, and folks can spend it how they please.

Personally, in terms of FPSes, I haven't seen anything revolutionary. Portal added something, and my re-discovery of Postal 2 was pretty humor-riffic...however, aside from an increase in graphics, the "got-to-have" FPSes just haven't hit home for me.

On a sadder note, its actually been a better time on the console. Assassin's Creed was enthralling and playing Army of Two was amazing. I personally didn't like Gears of War much (the game its based on), as Army broke up the monotony of duck-duck-duck in Advanced mode.

I'm still on World of WoWcrack, but besides that, I really don't see much of interest in PC gaming coming up. I can't wait to get a hold of StarCraft 2, but as for the other "must play games", eh...kinda snoozers IMHO. Just my opinion.

(edit) Personally, I'll be wrapped up on the console playing Smash when not on WoW. The line between PC's and Consoles is just going to get more and more gray till there is no line. One box that does it all, does that mean PC gaming is dead? No it means you got an xbox with a keyboard and a pc with a gamepad.

Half-life2 was awesome, Portal was awesome. TF2 alot of people like, I played TFC for a long time and I'm personally not a huge fan of the new one. Doom3 was pretty decent. Back in 1998-2003 They released more popular titles than in the past 5 years. I mean, for each new titles they release now, you HAVE to go and build a new pc just to play it. Obviously you missed 2007, probably one of the best years for gaming. This year, Starcraft 2 might be coming out.

The power requirements are not that bad, about 200-300W peak depending on your config. The Xbox360 and PS3 use about 200W peak as well.

You can still buy a PC today and use it for the next three years, it depends how high you want the settings to be. PC gaming is not dying, it might be expensive but there are a lot of games that cannot be played on a console.

What is people like you?

Gamers started around the 70's and are still going strong today as 30+ year old gamers as the main audience. I myself am 29 and started on a C64 and then through every damn console just about, then finally into PC gaming in 1998.
While I was PC gaming I did purchase a PS2 and Xbox, both which collected dust and I eventually sold.

PC gaming is where it is at and is where it is going to stay for me. RTS, FPS, MMO, games are BEST on a PC. I have owned over 50+ PC titles and spent roughly $2500 in PC games in over 10 years. As far as hardware requirements going up and up, sorry... if you can't keep up you simply save for the future.

The day I move to a console is the day a console turns into a PC practically, and by that I mean EVERYTHING a PC can do. I don't see that happening for another 5+ years or so... if that. And besides all that consoles go up in price every 3-4 years anyways, so both markets are steadily increasing.

As for what is good out there, Team Fortress 2, Half Life 2, and Battlefield 2 are my favorites right now and you don't need a smoking new system to play them either. F.E.A.R. was a awesome game as well for single player.

For newer games that are steep in the hardware requirements, I recommend Bioshock and Crysis.

As for PC gaming dying, I don't think so.
