Re: Post about PowerBoost and other speed increases here

Oh my, somebody just called my attention to your post and I was skeptical. I'm in the greater Seattle area and hadn't noticed any increase in upload speed, have the 8/768 plan. Just for grins, I checked and I see what you see, for whatever reason.

Edit: FWIW, I should probably add that I am in Verizon country. November 20, 2007 they started periodically hanging flyers on our doors to let us know they were beginning to "upgrade our network with fiber optics to bring unprecendented services right to your doorstep." January 20, 2008, it was evident they had contacted DigSafe, by the multicolored banners and markings on the street to indicate where existing utility connnections are located. January 30, 2008, all day, our neighborhood was swarming with workmen and equipment. They did the digs, the pulling of cable and the burying and were done before dark. I suspect it won't be long, but I don't know if this was the incentive for Comcast or not.

Congrats Sorto! Where's Blast! at? Do you have it available yet?

No, as you can see via my modem page, only the upload was upgraded. I'm formerly ATTBI, so it's possible the equipment on my network can't yet handle the Blast speeds. It will help, however, with getting Folding@Home WUs home faster, yes?

BTW, see my edit just made to that post.

So now we have an 8000/2000 tier. Geeez!! I can't wait to see how all the upgrades are going to shake out so I can revise the provisioning FAQ and put back the pricing/tier FAQ.

I'm wondering if the 6000/1000 for the 6000/384 folks and the 8000/2000 for the 8000/768 folks are for areas that can't (yet) handle Blast?

Anything sounds possible at this point. I would love to see the config file name for the 8800/2200 tier.

Hey; to satisfy my curiosity, go rent an SB5101 and we'll get to see what config file name you have.

Thanks for the info espaeth.

That naming convention is a bit different.

Wonder if that stands for *standard* with Powerboost ?

Could be. "Speedtier" has lately been associated with 8/768, and also with Blast:

I believe that this info is current and accurate:

Speedtier Extreme is the Blast 16 / 1 service.

Speedtier Extreme 2 is the Blast 16 / 2 service.

Performance Plus is 8000 kbps / 768 kbps

Performance: 6000 kbps / 384 kbps

New tier, name or availability not yet known: 6000 kbps / 1 Mbps

Select areas only:
Performance / Silverdeluxe: 6000 kbps / 768 kbps

This is how some of the config files look:

d11_m_ [*******] _standard_c01.cm = (4/384) [Standard]

d11_m_ [*******] _silver_c01.cm = (6/384) [Performance]

d11_m_ [*******] _silverdeluxe_c01.cm) = (6/768) [Silver Deluxe]

d11_m_ [*******] _speedtier_c01.cm = (8/768) [Performance Plus]

d11_m_ [*******] _speedtierextreme_c01.cm = (16/1) [Blast 1]

d11_m_ [*******] _speedtierextreme2_c01.cm = (16/2) [Blast 2]

******* [denotes modem model #]

d11_m_ [******] _silverpboost_c01.cm = (6/1) [Name of tier not yet known]

Config file names:

speedtierextreme2 - 16000/2000
speedtierextreme – 16000/1000
speedtier – 8000/768
silverpboost - 6/1
silverdeluxe – 6000/768
silver – 6000/384
standard – 4000/384

When I called about the 50/5 upgrade that was made available in our market I asked if any other new plans were available, they stated the 6/384 plan was being upgraded to 6/1 and 8/768 to 8/2 at no additional cost. The Arstechnica article about the 50/5 plan also references these speed upgrades. Upon rebooting my modem that was the new config file that was deployed to me.

I've confirmed that the new config allows boosting to 4mbps for 20MB before ratcheting down to 2mbps by uploading content via FTP to servers I have colocated at Gigenet (Chicago) and Colo4Dallas. I don't have graphs handy but would be happy to produce RRD graphs and FTP logs if necessary.

Just a followup on my post above where I mentioned 8800/2200 caps noticed here (Comcast). Notice the edit in that post where I mention the evidence Verizon FIOS was on its way.

It is now here. I received a flyer in the mail yesterday offering Verizon "doubleplay12" (internet plus unlimited calling) for $69.99 a month, first month free if I order by 30 June. I checked via their site (home phone) and received confirmation it is available here, with several signup offers for the various tiers. It kinda' makes one feel greedy, you know?

Edit: This is not intended to take us off topic to a discussion of another company's offerings. I am including it because many are speculating about Blast being offered only to those with FIOS available and yet we see cases where Blast appears with no FIOS in sight and here I am with only part of a Blast and then FIOS becomes available. Methinks both companies are just doing their best to compete whenever and wherever they can.

It is one of those things that makes you go "hmmmmmm" when you look at this isolated from everyone else. But who can really know?
