| Moving up @ SHAW
If someone gets hired at Shaw and their dedicated, have a grade 12 education but are willing to pursue part time stuff such as gettin certs like CCNA, A+ networkplus and stuff like that, will shaw encourage that and allow you to grow? What is the growth @ shaw like? I think I wanna be at the shaw technical operations but might start out at Tier 1 Technical Support? |

| reply to dedation4lyfe24 Some years ago I was taking CCNA and applied at shaw, bottom level position or any available and i did not even get an interview. I doubt they give two shits if you show initiative.
Odd thing is I know a person who does not have much computer skills yet was offered a entry level job working customer service. |

| reply to dedation4lyfe24 When I started at Shaw I had the same goal, get my foot in the door as a Tier 1 and then plug away at getting to where I wanted to go. They were very supportive of that idea, and in six years working there I went from Tier 1 after a year to Tier 2. I then decided I was going to gun for a job in the NOC, and had I not completely bombed the interview I'd probably be living in Calgary right now . The setback made me re-evaluate what I really wanted to do (and where I was willing to live/move to) though and so I started job shadowing the head end techs when they would do cutovers. I moved into field services as a service technician to get more understanding of the RF side of the HFC plant and ended up loving it so much it completely changed what I wanted to do as my career. If I hadn't left Shaw to go be a lineman for the phone company I think I would probably be in their plant maintenance division right now. I would say that they're very good at promoting from within if you're interested and show initiative. |

| reply to dedation4lyfe24 They are alright... dont expect Shaw to help you cover the costs though. When i worked there i had to fight tooth and nail to get Shaw to pay for outside certification or training. I was an install tech that mainly worked on PC's i didn't have my A+ so i decided to get it... A+ being an industry standard you would think Shaw would encourage this... but i had to take it all the way past my supervisor up to the head of the Calgary area to get them to cover any of the 2 exams.
but other then that i did know and work with people that moved around in the company. |

| reply to dedation4lyfe24 It depends which system you are working in and the growth being experienced. I was able to move up in less than a year. Shaw is still growing quite quickly and there is prospect of more new products coming in the next couple years that will spur even more growth. So I would say now is a good time to join Shaw. |

| reply to dedation4lyfe24 I see there are many insiders here.. so does anyone know when Docsis 3.0 will be deployed and what speeds will be offered? I know that they are seriously considering 3.0, but what are the plans and what time frame are we looking at for an upgrade in speeds? Cone on insiders... |

@shawcable.net | reply to dedation4lyfe24 It could possibly be that it is being tested right now, we cannot give out ANY information on the deployment of shaw services.. unfortunately. |

@shawcable.net | reply to dedation4lyfe24 I agree...be patient for DOCSIS 3.0 - also, moving up at Shaw depends on how much initiative you show.
I am in technical ops and worked in TSR for 2 years. |

| reply to dedation4lyfe24 Not sure if this is still the case but there was always a shortage of Mac techs (this was pre OS X) and just saying you used a Mac got your resume looked at. Not only would they give you a little leeway on the test but also in the interview (Mac gurus can be a little eccentric). It also helped with more stable shifts. In one office there were only three Mac techs and they pretty much wrote their own shifts. They also worked no later than 9pm because they mostly did call backs. It won't help you getting into the ops center directly but it will make you stand out. |

| reply to dedation4lyfe24 I worked for Shaw back in 1999 when they were just launching the cable modem network. I moved up from CSR to TSR in 3 months and from TSR to TSR level 2 in 6 months and from there to head end IP tech (rolling out backbone routers) within 1 year of start date. I had grade 12 and zero certs but I used to be a small ISP sysadmin so I knew some Server admin stuff, but light on network skills.
After being an IP head end tech for a few months I thought about applying for the NOC in Calgary (I was not originally in Calgary). Somebody higher up said the job was mine if I wanted it. In short, I knew my shit. I even designed some basic software to monitor bandwidth usage and modem RF levels... took 'em 3+ years before they actually took that stuff seriously.
After about 1.5 years I left Shaw for another Telco as it seemed that the only options at Shaw for moving up beyond head end tech was to go to Calgary (their HQ). There you can get network Engineering jobs, NOC jobs etc - the cool stuff.
Shaw was a pretty good company to me, so I am thankful. I even got to meet Brad Shaw - Senior VP (had one face to face meeting), Peter Bassionette - President(had dinner with him once at Shaw event) & went to Jim Shaw's (original Shaw founder) home once to upgrade his cable modem & clean nasties from his PC! hehe
Those were the days.
I'm sure Shaw's changed a lot and grown by leaps and bounds in this cable modem area, and there's bound to be far more competition... hell I was deplying pre-Docsis 1.0 Terayon modems
Anyway, just wanted to say that not to worry about Shaw not paying for Certs - if that's true. They are not that expensive. Get some Cisco video training torrents, get dynamips (virtual router software) and then study & practice your ass off at home and spend the $150 or whatever to write the Cert exams... THEN go and apply for a higher position. Doing it on your own shows initiative afterall.
Good luck. |
