 A giant corporation strikes again.

I guess Verizon who currently owns Airfone wants to sell Airfone to LiveTV. Please see this link: »www22.verizon.com/airfone/ If airline passengers are permitted to bypass Airfone the value of Airfone to LiveTV goes down the crapper and Verizon loses. I am sure our government does not care if a passenger is disturbed by someone near them talking on a cellphone, otherwise they would ban Airfone service. This is more likely big business getting the best government and laws money can buy.

Airfone service is expensive, and not designed for casual chatting. Using a cell phone on a plane will require the installation of hardware to route the signals to a satellite, either directly or via VOIP. Make no mistake about this: people will taka A LOT more than they do now, especially if the cost is free or very cheap. People do not talk to strangers on a plane very much or very often, but stuck on a long flight with little to do, a phone becomes very tempting. If you are next to someone talking, where can you go? It won't be like on the ground where you can just move away. Lacking a dedicated, sound proofed area for people to use, cell phone use should not be allowed unrestricted. As far as leaving it up to the airlines, PLEASE! Look at the mess they are in now, which is a direct result of deregulation. Don't give them more authority over our lives in flight.
