| [Home Networking] Sync Loss when connected to router
About 3 months ago I started losing my DSL connection rather frequently when it was connected to my router. I can connect when I don't use the router and connect directly into the desktop. The only thing that has changed was I connected my xbox to the router with a wired connection. But even when it's not connected, it rarely works any more.
Modem is a Netopia UHP and the router is Linksys WRT54G both provided by Earthlink. |

| So that I understand, you can use the Netopia in UHP Mode and the DSL LED stays on fine with no problems and the single system setup for that works, but when you plug in the Linksys Router, then the DSL LED goes out on the Netopia until you remove the Linksys? How far apart are the units? Are they in a area that has a bunch of other electronics? Are you using DSL filters on all your other telephone jacks that are in use?
I'd want to first see what your DSL Statistics look like using just the Netopia in UHP Mode.

Then I'd ask if you have tried relocating the DSL Modem plus whether the DSL Modem is on a 6 to 7 foot cord to the wall jack or are you using a much longer cord to the wall jack? A shorter telephone line is preferred and then you may use a longer Ethernet cable.
When you did hook the two together, was it configured as in this FAQ?

If your DSL Stats are low, I'd suggest testing out at the NID next.

That's correct. The units are about 3 feet apart with minimal electronics around and DSL filters are check. It had worked fine for over a year, even with a very long phone cord and in the midst of other wires. The EL tech was confident that moving things and rearranging wires was going to fix the problem. It didn't. I put in a shorter phone cord, moved stuff about and made sure it was set up according to that FAQ.
I'll have to see about checking the NID. I did have a conversation with the phone company and the tech was actually watching it lose the connection. They sent someone out to check the line (at least they said they did, I never saw anybody) and the report was the line was fine.

| OK, it doesn't look to be that your DSL Stats are bad as currently posted. Temporarily add the Router back, but don't place the UHP Modem into Bridge Mode this time (leave it handling the PPPoE). Instead set the Router to DHCP (not PPPoE this time) and then get the DSL Stats while the Router is added back.

O.K. I tried that quickly before I had to go out of town. The Sync light and the PPPoE light came on on the modem, but I could connect to the internet and couldn't access the modem to get the stat's from it. I could access the router but I don't know how to get the stats from it. |

| When the UHP Modem is left handling the PPPoE login and your Wired or Wireless Router behind it is setup for DHCP (aka Automatically Get IP Address) then you will have access to both the Web Interfaces of the UHP Modem at »172.16.0.254/ and the Linksys Router at »192.168.1.1/ using your Browser.
What happens in that setup configuration is you are letting the UHP Modem get your Public IP on the UHP Modem's WAN Interface (since it handles the PPPoE duties) and it has a LAN Interface IP of »172.16.0.254/ that then gives your Linksys Router WAN Interface a IP of »172.16.1.11/ (or 172.16.1.12 or 13, or 14) and the Linksys LAN Interface is still at »192.168.1.1/ and the Linksys will still hand out 192.168.1.x IPs.
This way you can still access both units and get the DSL Stats while still being able to share the connection by using the Linksys Router features.
When it is configured correctly, you can access either unit or both units at the same time (using two browser windows or tabs in that case).
To reach the UHP use »172.16.0.254/
To reach the Linksys use »192.168.1.1/

I think that's what I did before but it wouldn't let me access the modem. Anyway, I reconnected like you said and after 3 hours finally got a DSL sync light and PPPoE. But it's been cutting in and out even as I type this. I found I was also able to access the modem and router wirelessly from my laptop in the other room.
Here's the new stats from the modem

They look about the same to me.
Could the X-Box have done something wierd to the router? I think I forgot to mention that the signal seemed to drop at peak hours, locally. Evenings and Weekends, but now it's happening more and more. I thought maybe the increase in traffic at those times might have something to do with it, but the fact that it worked fine when I didn't use the router confused me. |

| That is very strange and I agree that the numbers are not drastically changed so I don't know what to suggest next unless it is just the Modem going bad over time and possibly needs replacement. Do you have a friend, neighbor or co-worker that may have a DSL Modem that you can borrow for testing?

I've thought about that but what I don't understand is why the modem seems to work fine without the router, even during the times I mentioned. I first thought it was the router and got a new one, but it seemed to do the same thing. Maybe I didn't give it enough time to warm up before I gave up. I'l see what I can do about a different modem. Thanks for all you help.
