Re: [FYI] Our Pet Memorial Thread

Sorry to hear this Tim. It doesn't matter if they were with us only a couple of weeks or pushing a couple of decades, it's never easy. But at least you can take comfort in providing a good, loving home for him to spend his last year of life in.

Well, unfortunately I have one to add. This is Spook. I got her when she was 8 weeks old. She passed away just a couple of hours ago at age 17.

Through a certain period of my life I moved around a lot. Everywhere I went, I refused to give up my spook or leave her behind. She went through it all with me.

Spook was strange, she didn't like strangers who came over to my place and she would hide. There was only one person who she actually came to and sit next to, which floored me and him.

When my now husband suggested we become roommates back in 97, I knew he hated cats but I told him if he won't allow her to move in with me then I couldn't do it.

Long story short, he swears that it was spook that chose him and brought us together as a couple, we were just friends before all this.

Needless to say he's taking this hard. I'll be 34 soon and it's very hard to believe my spook was with me for half of my life.

She will be missed.

Sorry to ramble...

Tripod, our three legged kitty. Had to be put to sleep, at 11 years old, at the end of this past July. I miss him dearly.

Unfortunatly my 9yr. old and I are next to add to this thread. I pray that the next death on this neighborhood street isn't a child. Please do the speed limit or below on your neighborhood streets........

And if you are one of those that purposely aim,.....shame, shame....

He was about three months old on my daughter's 1st birthday party.
He saw a lot of other pets come and go: 3 rabbits, 3 dogs, and 4 other cats.
He was loaded up and moved 8 times, calling 9 different houses/apartments home
He made it through 20 Halloweens, but just barely.

Liza, 1992(?) - 2008
Died in the company of her loving adopted parents Dec 1, 2008 at 5:12 PM.

Born sometime in 1991-92, she enjoyed a successful career as Barn Cat, dispatching many chipmunks and mice in her duties. She was promoted to Chief House Cat in late 1996 and served until her death. She was an accomplished actress, having performed to rave reviews as Pyewacket in Bell Book and Candle. As an accomplished game player ("Get that Cat") she was 1000-0.

She was loved by all, and will be missed and remembered by her family and host of friends.
said by T.S. Eliot :

Up, up, up past the Russell Hotel
Up, up, up, up to the Heaviside layer
Up, up, up past the Jellicle Moon
Up, up, up, up to the Heaviside Layer
Up, up, up past the Jellicle moon
Up, up, up, up to the Heaviside Layer

The mystical divinity of unashamed felinity
Round the cathedral rang 'Vivat'
Life to the everlasting cat!

Earlier this fall, turning yellow, but still a happy guy.
Pete, my favorite kitty... ever.. Was put down last Saturday because of advanced liver disease. He has been sick for two years, but he took a turn for the worse just before Thanksgiving. He was a sweet, funny good natured little guy who loved to eat, sleep and give kisses. We rescued Pete and his brother Leo from the pound over 12 years ago. I have always loved cats, and I loved Pete best of all...

My wife's Siamese was the same way. When we started dating in 93, the ol gal was 13. She didn't like anyone, but she sat on my lap the first day I was over there. She had NEVER done that to anyone outside the family. Guess she knew something. We lost her 3 years later.

Enjoying the company of her personal sunbeam
Last year we adopted a Basenji from the humane society. I'd always wanted one, but prefer to adopt older dogs, and Basenji aren't common in shelters around here. So I was beside myself when I saw Ruby up for adoption. She came home with us in mid-October 2007. Unlike typical Basenji who can be a bit stubborn, she was very obedient, well behaved, accepted all the other pets, including the rats. She loved going for walks, enjoyed the leash-free parks and even put up with several baths after a skunk encounter (Basenji do not like water unless it's for drinking. They're very clean dogs and groom themselves like cats do, so she must have decided that an evil bath was okay in this instance. )

We lost our fantastic friend on Tuesday, November 25, 2008, when Ruby crossed Rainbow Bridge.
On Thursday, just a few days earlier, she was chasing squirrels, one of her favourite pastimes. One particular squirrel will never ever set foot on my trees again, he's learned to steer clear of this yard. She only looked a bit "off" on Saturday, but not really sick. Sunday she walked a little bit slow, rested more than usual, and didn't eat, not even her favourite supper, green tripe. I knew something wasn't right. I got her to the vet on Monday. She was so good with all the x-rays, blood tests and shots, didn't object once. The preliminary results showed a bladder infection and pneumonia. I took her home, made her comfy, she even let the cats snuggle with her (something she would never do before). There was no sign of her going downhill, she just looked and acted a bit sick. She had a good night, took her pills in the morning like a trooper. Around noon the vet phoned to give me some updates, and when I went back into the living room after the phone call, I noticed Ruby wasn't breathing. She'd just quietly slipped away during the 10 minutes I was on the phone.

When we brought her to the clinic to arrange cremation, the vet told me that she and the other doctors had looked at the x-rays and saw that Ruby had a couple of lung tumours. She hid it so well. Even a few weeks earlier when she went for her annual physical, she passed with flying colours, all tests said she was healthy. Anyone who had seen her the last few months couldn't believe she had been so close to the end. She even got compliments on how young she looked and acted, even though she was 11 years old. At least she didn't suffer long.

The first picture was taken in October, just a few weeks before she left us.

We only had a year together, but we had a good time, she had fun and love. I'll never again find a Basenji like her, she'll be my one-and-only.

Sammie
After 18 and a half years our cat Sammie, passed away a little after midnight on New Year's Eve.

She fought a long battle with Thyroid cancer, however she was hanging in there and doing OK up until Wednesday. Her decline was very rapid, she stopped walking the afternoon before she passed away. I think she waited until we got back from vacation so we could say good-bye to her.

She took her last breath as I was petting her.
