@uu.net | Its down again
So much for redundant backup systems so they don't go down again. I have been down since around 11:15 pm Thursday night, almost 2 hours ago. I gotta get out of this contract! |

| reply to slick1ru2 WTF is going on down there?! I've been trying to get in touch with them for two hours! Do they all go home when there's an outage!?
Their new "never be without information" phone system has customers in an endless menu loop! Press 1 for sales, 2 for technical support.... so I press 2. Then "calls may be recorded... blah blah blah". Press 1 for sales, 2 for technical support!
Awful! Just Awful!!
I've sent them a FAX, and I've left both Mr. Sales and Mr. Robert Ford voice messages. I suggest other pissed off users do the same. Use the lookup feature to get Mr. Ford's extension.
BTW, this outage seems more "severe" than the last. During the last outage the ppp server remained connected the entire time. This time, the ppp server is unreachable... They'll probably blame it on BellSouth.
The only reason I haven't left is because my husband, who set all this up, died just over a year ago. I don't know how to reconfigure firewalls. Looks like I may have to figure that out though! |

| reply to slick1ru2 At 1:49AM, Fri, April 18, I can connect to both the Speed Factory webpage and also can access the webmail; however, I'm using Atnex DSL now so I am looking from the "outside in."
Regarding cancellation of the SF contract, I followed the route many on this forum took, ie, posting a message under CONTRACTS at their customer service. (FYI: A 30 minute telephone hold time earlier today was totally unproductive.)
I think my contract was only for the first year and I know of no other contract I'm under with them. My first year has been over for a while I think. Maybe y'all are not under a contract either if it's been over a year since you got your free modem. Not sure about the contracts though, that's just what I THINK is the deal.
I got lucky on the credit card thing I think. I called credit card company and they said they are already sending me new cards (as they periodically do as a routine measure) and they said when I activate the new card then the old card will no longer be usable. Got lucky there with some good timing by the credit card folks.
Ya know, it doesn't cost that much to have a replacement credit card issued, does it? Seems like last time I asked it was about $10 to do that. Like if you lost your card, they'd replace it for a small fee. The replacement card would basically be the same account but with new number.
My credit card people on phone were in India. Nothing at all against Indian people - they are a very smart and industrious people but dang if I can understand half of what they say.
Some folks earlier were talking bout the reliability of Bellsouth vs the local independents. I agree that Bellsouth might be safest bet and that many people would enjoy a Bellsouth connection with no problems. That being said though, I personally do not want Bellsouth's port blocking and I prefer my customer service is not outsourced to people I have difficulty communicating with. Plus I just like doing bizness with smaller businesses as opposed to the bohemoth corporations.
Also something to think about: Since my new ISP is a small company compared to say Bellsouth, I REALLY like the way you can often get the e-mail address that's your first choice. same as with Speed Factory, my new e-mail address is my first name and nothing else. I don't have to be John_Doe1960@bellsouth.net Having my first name as my e-mail address helps a little nobody like me feel a little more important, ya know?
Best of luck to all of you with the Speed Factory difficulties. Please keep posting all the valuable info and I will post what I know, also. |

@gayliving.com | Someone give me a SpeedFactory DSL ip address & I'll setup a pinger to see when/if they have more outages. I may be able to tell what is out next time. |

@ga.us | reply to slick1ru2 We lost dsl connectivity about 11:30pm Thursday night as well. We do have dialin though. Opened a support case via the web page but don't expect to get an answer. I don't know if I can wait 2 more months for our contract to expire. |

@Level3.net
| reply to SKL111 Thanks for the offer SKL111. Unfortunately it's a home made Linux implementation. My husband was a super geek and used our home as an elaborate test base for his work projects. Also as an outlet to prove things could be done that they wouldn't let him do at work...
DNS, Mail server, web server, etc. None of which I know how to maintain. But, he did show me how to restart ppp services. |
