So my old neighbor wasn't crazy. We actually do have earthquakes here in the Midwest.

Yes i know its possible, just never heard of it actually happening.

The largest series of Earthquakes ever to hit North America hit on the New Madrid Fault south of St Louis. 5 quakes ranging from 7.7 to 9.4 rattled the area for up to one hour each, the Mississippi and Missouri rivers both ran north wards as there river beds lifted and estimated 22 feet in Madrid where the area actually shook for 2 days straight.

In Fact, there are reports of the Mississippi river flowing into the Erie canal.

I'm confused. How could the Mississippi flow back into the Erie Canal? I thought the Erie Canal ran from Buffalo to Albany, niether city being anywhere near the Mississippi.

The Mississippi flowed back into the area of subsided ground to form Reelfoot Lake, Tennessee.
There was no backflow north of this point.

The 1811 & 1812 New Madrid quakes were felt as far as the East Coast, and could have had an effect on surface water hundreds of miles away, but did not have that kind of effect on the Ohio River.
Besides, the Erie Canal did not even exist then.

That's what I thought. I knew about Reelfoot Lake (as a big part of the area is called the Reelfoot Rift).

Sorry...I was misreading my source....According to the USGA, there were reports that the river flowed northward and affected the Ohio and many small rivers and creeks, some of them that north north.

There are visual signs of this backflow still in the fields along the river in Tennessee, the Missouri and Ohio.

Recent digs in several areas have discovered large blow holes that are indicative of rivers reversing course.

Also the 1911 quakes affected over 50,000 square miles while the San Francisco quake affected only 6,000.
