How does the DDOS work and what if I get blocked?

How do these denial of service attacks work, is it by a virus that turns people's computers into bots? If that is the case, anyone could end up on the ignore list of IPs? How do we avoid being used this way?

I am deeply glad the site is running again!

thats a big topic.

in short you probably won't end up on the ban list unless the number of requests rises to the point where your IP is considered part of the attack. You'd have to hit reload very quickly for a short interval to get there. If it does get there, it'll get removed at some random point within hours or less, to see if it makes the list again.

As an example..

Once upon a time we had the google 'dance' asking to get back in the forums..Justin and crew made provisions to handle the matter. That google IP is used to deep search a forum with many requests at one time..flooding the access logs.

So in the Past a message was available to that 'BOT' and it went something like this..

"dslreports.com system message We have detected this IP address has used a web accelerator or pre-fetch agent or site mirror too. These tools not welcome. Please disable it, then type in the URL ht tp : //www.broadbandreports.com/enable/66.249.65.236 (remove the spaces!) to restore access immediately.

I have no idea how it will all be handled now or in the future.

But it is comforting to know this site really cares about it members..keeping them informed..having a site bug place like this forum.. and helping every member no matter how silly others might think the question.

Even if you're ip gets banned, getting back in is pretty easy. Either use a proxy or if you have dynamic ip, just reset your modem and get new ip and you're back in.

Unless you have Optimum Online where your IP address changes once a year, if that, even if you reset your modem. I got an old IP address back after a month. I changed my NIC card, got a new address, and then moved the modem to the computer where the old NIC card went, and got the old IP back. Seems Cablevision likes to assign their IP addresses to the MAC addresses. The only way to force an IP change is to change the MAC address of whatever the modem is connecting to.

Using correct programs, changing mac address just takes couple of clicks and restart.

Unless your ISP properly follows the DHCP standard, in which case this really won't do a thing. Read half of the forums on these very boards and you'll see that a modem reset will almost never accomplish what you're saying it will.
