| Capped at 3MB?
I've recently called Suddenlink in the West Texas area to see what speed package I'm on. I hadn't checked on anything since Cox packed up and left, and figured by now I should be seeing faster speeds than my 3 Mbps download speeds. Sure enough, I call, and the rep says I should be on the 8Mbps and he changes me over.
Problem is, no matter what I've tried on my end (rebooted SonicWALL router and Motorola Surfboard SB3100) I seem to be capped at 3Mbps. All of my speed tests from speedtest.net are at or below 2.8Mbps, and won't go over at all. Do I need a new modem? I've had this one probably since 2000. Or can I do a firmware upgrade? Any ideas why I'm capped? Help! |

| You gave yourself the likely correct answer. Upgrade Hardware |

| reply to Korereactor Ok, getting a little frustrated. I've decided to hold off on the phone service, so I go to our local Suddenlink office and purchase a new modem so i can at least get better speeds than 3Mbps (take advantage of the 8Mbps I'm paying for). I still can't get above 2.8Mbps on any of the speed tests that I do.
I call Suddenlink's support and they say that my router is to blame, and that the security will slow you down.
Funny, I install these things for a living, and I have a similar firewall/router (SonicWALL) on a 6Mbps ATM (That's 4 T-1's) at work and I can get above 2.8Mbps just fine there.
What the heck is going on here? |

| reply to Korereactor Well, don't I feel dumb. I managed to fix it:
Turns out, if you have a SonicWALL, those security services, such as anti-spyware, intrusion detection, and gateway antivirus really do take a chunk of your bandwidth.
Oh, and yes, I called Suddenlink back to admit defeat.
I'm going to go crawl back into my little hole now... |

| 1) Don't feel bad. The only advice you got from here was to buy a new modem, which... unless you had something with a handcrank to start the interwebs up... you should be fine on anything Suddenlink offers right now.
2) Working with that equipment frequently, I'd hope you knew what it does and doesn't do. So why does it work with that stuff on at another site?
3) It is partially the fault of horrible advice from this thread... your trust in your hardware... and the rep's inability to be persistant enough to talk over you and tell you to unplug it and test. :-P
Not harping on ya or anything, just saying... is a crap situation Now, if you're persistant enough... you can return that new modem to the local office! |

| We haven't notice the SonicWALL's issue with reducing bandwidth mostly because we haven't had service over 3Mbps, aside from our main office. We're going to start testing this issue there to see if we need to turn it off or not. I'm seeing some Cisco gear for us in the near future.
I didn't mind getting a new modem, it was only like $35 or so, and half the size of my old SB3100 Surfboard, so it was all for the best, even if it was a bit premature.
I was so accustom to ISP's blaming routers that before I argued I should have connected into the modem directly. That's really my fault there - I should have known better. I suppose if the tech had been more polite like the second one I talked to on the phone, I may have listened better. Who knows? All I know is I hit 8.2Mbps this morning in testing - I'm a happy camper!! |
