Got a new Motorola 5101 Modem hooked straight to the pc and was able to get Power Boost. i know this cause when i took speed tests i would get 19000mb down and 1.5mb up. How ever when i connected the modem to my old Linksys NR041 Router i noticed during speed tests that Power Boost would not kick in. i would stay at 6mb down and 1mb up. Is this due to my Router not being able to support Power Boost? the router is like a 2001/2002 model with no speed adjustments or anything.

Thing is I have had roughly the same speed as I do now. If i get around 2000 kbps upload now with speedboost, what would 1mb upload look like with speedboost?

What is Blast?

It is described under the Comcast HSI pricing structure here: »/faq/7024 Blast! is an actual speed upgrade to 16/1 or 16/2, which will be reflected in measures of actual download and upload. Because of PowerBoost, you cannot demonstrate the Blast! upgrade has been received. You can tell by measure of actual download and upload of large files, by looking at the capped speed in some modems' diagnostic pages, or by charges on your Comcast bill (if you have actually ordered the Blast! tier.)

How can I show confirmation I have the Blast! tier?

Show a screenshot of an actual download and then an upload of about 100 MB of a much larger file which demonstrates that you do have the new speeds, sustained and not just an initial burst like PowerBoost.

Show a screenshot of a letter or email you received which confirms the new speed tier is available to you in your area.

Post a screenshot of a scan of a Comcast invoice which shows you have the Blast! tier on your account. (Be sure to obscure personal identification information.)

If you have a Motorola Surfboard 5120 modem, this post will explain how to confirm you have the Blast! tier via your modem logs. Some older Linksys modems will show the name of the config file in their diagnostic pages as well. Show us the screenshot, please. This post recaps current config file names and translates what they indicate in terms of speed caps.

Newer Linksys modems, such as Model BEFCMU10, Version 4 will show the caps on your connection. Go to the connection link via »192.168.100.1 and look at the provision rates for both downstream and upstream channels, as shown in this post. Upload a screenshot.

The various java and flash speed tests cannot confirm Blast! tier because they don't test download/upload past the bursts of PowerBoost.

As part of my tests to discover why I wasn't getting the new upload speeds, despite being told by Comcast that my modem had received them, I upgraded the firmware on my WRT54G. For years now I have been running the HyperWRT + Thibor custom firmware because I needed QoS, and I was still on revision 14. So I installed Thibor revision 15c, the last release.

While going through the router status pages to ensure all was well, I noticed that at some point in time long ago, I had manually set the upstream bandwidth for QoS purposes at 330Kb/s. Apparently this has the effect of actually limiting upstream throughput at the router level.

Kicked self in the ass for being a dummkopf and then changed the upstream bandwidth to "Auto", which detected my limit at 1364Kb/s. Now everything is working exactly as it is supposed to. Current speed tests show:

So, it looks like my work here is done. :D

, if you are not seeing the upgrade either, then that suggests something larger is happening in this area.

The Comcast rep suggested I call him on Monday if I haven't been able to work it out, and he'd get in touch with some techs in the SWFL area to investigate.

Yep, I'll keep checking too for a few more days before I try to get a hold of Comcast and ask if we're gonna get the upgrade. I always hesitate to call them about such things, because I have a TiVo HD with two CableCARDs in it and it took forever to get the billing ironed out. Any time someone at Comcast touches my account, there's a risk they're gonna frag my CableCARDs (it's happened before) and I hate dealing with that.

Man, I used to play PC games online back in the good old days. Since I started working from home a few years ago, though, it became problematic to keep game stuff on my work rig, so I moved over to consoles. Mainly a 360 player now.

Probably is a Thompson. What I meant, though, is that I believe our whole area's headend equipment is Scientific Atlanta, not just my modem -- rather than Motorola as in 90% of Comcast areas. Maybe that's got something to do with the delay?

I have tested the update on over four computers in many different South Florida cities to be sure it is not limited to one section. Also Power Boost is also still available. I have the 8/2 tier and I get about 16/3 when power boost is running and during speed tests. Customers that have the 6/1 tiers get about 12/2 with Power Boost enabled.

I really believe that Comcast only did this to downplay their recent bad press about protocol interference. They simply feel that by giving a speed boost would disillusion some into forgetting about their other dubious tricks. But sorry I'm not biting as Comcast can give me 100/100 but what good is it if I can't use it for anything?

For reference, I'm on the 6/384 tier, using a Scientific Atlanta WebSTAR DPC2100R2 and apparently we haven't gotten the 6/1 upgrade in this area yet.

Some older Linksys modems will show the name of the config file in their diagnostic pages as well. Show us the screenshot, please. This post recaps current config file names and translates what they indicate in terms of speed caps.

Newer Linksys modems, such as Model BEFCMU10, Version 4 will show the caps on your connection. Go to the connection link via »192.168.100.1 and look at the provision rates for both downstream and upstream channels, as shown in this post. Upload a screenshot.

The various java and flash speed tests cannot confirm Blast! tier because they don't test download/upload past the bursts of PowerBoost.

I am aware of PowerBoost and know what it is. However, this is the first time I now dramatically exceed the upload speed for as long as I have been a Comcast subscriber and for as long as Powerboost has been around. Up until now, my prior Powerboost upload speeds were as provisioned, not spiking to double as currently. Moreover, the speeds are similar on other speedtest sites. Not complaining, mind you! :)

A DOCSIS 2.0 system can handle DOCSIS 1.1 upstream in tandem, so one would think the 3.0 pre-cert gear would be DOCSIS 3.0 on the downstream (allowing channel bonding) and the higher upload of DOCSIS 2.0 on the upstream. They might as well squeeze as much bandwidth out of the system they are currently using.

Also, by doing it this way, they keep the majority of people on tiers that DOCSIS 2.0 can handle until DOCSIS 3.0 modems become more widely available. I'm starting to wonder if they aren't doing a side upgrade to DOCSIS 2.0 upstream channels when they prep a market for the DOCSIS 3.0 rollout. I chart my SB5100 upstream and downstream channel information in Cacti using a html fetch script, and my upstream channel was the same for at least 18 months before they pushed down the stpboost config file. Receiving that file was the first time my upstream channel changed.

A DOCSIS 1.1 channel has an upstream limit of 9mbps, whereas DOCSIS 2.0 is 27mbps. (3x scaling factor) 384k x 3 = 1152k 768k x 3 = 2304k If you're upgrading your CMTS to DOCSIS 3.0, you get full support of previous revisions including DOCSIS 2.0 as well. I've had 1MB uploads for over a year. You either have some kind of provisioning issue or an old outdated modem like the SB4000 series. Before, the 1MB upload was powerboost. Now its standard. Reboot your modem and see what config file is pushed out to you.
