sigfreund : Sorry to burst everyone's bubble, but PowerBoost is a clever scam to masked the poor download speed Comcast is providing. By boosting the first 10 megs of download, virtually all speed measurements will appear great. Unfortunately, once the initial 10meg is downloaded your speed plummets and depending on demand in your area it can be dismal. Using a continous monitoring program I saw frequent times when my download speed dropped below 1meg/sec. Downloading something large (Linux DVD) it took forever! I finally gave up and switched to DSL and now am receiving a nearly constant 6meg/sec. I was able to download a 4gb file in half the time using DSL and my internet surfing is noticably faster. PowerBoost had me convinced delays in download were source related but now I know where the real bottleneck was.

reelbigfish : That does make sense. Virtually all modems purchased recently have been DOCSIS 2.0 compatible including all Arris and Motorola eMTAs for Comcast Digital Voice. A DOCSIS 2.0 system can handle DOCSIS 1.1 upstream in tandem, so one would think the 3.0 pre-cert gear would be DOCSIS 3.0 on the downstream (allowing channel bonding) and the higher upload of DOCSIS 2.0 on the upstream. They might as well squeeze as much bandwidth out of the system they are currently using.

Also, by doing it this way, they keep the majority of people on tiers that DOCSIS 2.0 can handle until DOCSIS 3.0 modems become more widely available. I wouldn't be surprised if in the next two years, people who order lower tiers of Comcast High Speed Internet will end up getting DOCSIS 3.0 modems so when they do fully deploy all DOCSIS 3.0 gear with upstream and downstream channel bonding by 2010, everyone will be able to take advantage.

I chart my SB5100 upstream and downstream channel information in Cacti using a html fetch script, and my upstream channel was the same for at least 18 months before they pushed down the stpboost config file. Receiving that file was the first time my upstream channel changed.

A DOCSIS 1.1 channel has an upstream limit of 9mbps, whereas DOCSIS 2.0 is 27mbps. (3x scaling factor) 384k x 3 = 1152k 768k x 3 = 2304k If you're upgrading your CMTS to DOCSIS 3.0, you get full support of previous revisions including DOCSIS 2.0 as well.
