| Maximum security for Linksys WRT54GL wireless router?
Any thoughts on following this "maximum security" setup guide step by step? Is it safe enough for most users? Thanks!

| We've discussed MAC address filtering and disabling the broadcasting of / cloaking SSIDs quite a few times. Check the threads in the forums. Assuming your wireless card supports WPA2, then go for it. That's the main piece of your wireless security.
Changing your IP space is fine and all, but if you want to take it one step further, change your IP space to a /29 or smaller (unless you really need an entire /24 address space). If you can set up a username login for the router's administration interface other than "admin," I'd do that too. |

What does changing your IP space do in terms of security? |

| Realistically, not much. A security-through-obscurity posture by making the available IP space / range a bit less predictable. Practically, it may confuse script kiddies, but only at first. Then again, some automated attacks out there assume one uses the default IP space that's configured on most home routers. These would be one of the following:
192.168.0.0 /24 192.168.1.0 /24.
Constraining it to, say, a 192.168.55.0 /29 space might confuse beginner hackers who try to give themselves an IP like 192.168.55.10 and not have it work. |

| reply to cerdan Two Step Guide 1. change router password (decent length password 10+ and a mix of letters U/L, numbers, symbols) 2. use WPA or WPA2 wifi security, grc site used is excellent.
Rest is an exercise in router and OS manipulation practice. As far as disabling SSID, thats bad advice. -- Ain't nuthin but the blues! "Albert Collins". Leave your troubles at the door! "Pepe Peregil" De Sevilla. Just Don't Wifi without WPA, "Yul Brenner"
