New Arris tm502g modem slowing internet to a crawl.

I just switched out my Motorola Surfboard for an Arris tm502g telephony modem. There is another thread on here about this and I registered to post in that, but it said the topic was too old, although the OP's problem was never solved and I have the same problem.

I took my old modem to the Comcast office and exchanged it for the Arris modem. I plugged it in and called and had it provisioned and set up. The internet worked, but I was pinging google.com at 1500ms or more. The problem was my roommate using uTorrent and Soulseek and uploading a lot, but the setting he had were exactly the same as they were with the old modem. We had to lower the upload limit to only 20k before we were getting normal pings again. With the old modem we could set the upload at 80k and it would peak at 150k. But with this new modem if the limit is set much higher than 20k the internet slows to a crawl. Is there anything I can do?

They have self install kits. They said they just started with them last week. It came new in a box with another box with 2 free cordless phones in it.

A what? Why is a self install kit a bad idea? It's not difficult to plug the modem into the wall and then the phone line into the modem.

I have no problems with the phone part of it. The modem is just 4x slower than my old one and I was asking on here whether anyone else had that problem. What sort of problems would anyone ever have installing this thing? You just plug it in.

Because voip is more sensitive to problems than internet traffic. You can have crappy wiring and splitters and the internet may work fine. The same wires will cause echoing and breakup on a phone call. More than 2/3 of the phone self install kits will result in a technician coming out to fix something. It's not that the emta caused the problem. The problem was always there, you just never noticed it.

Not saying that's what's going on with you, just answering your question.

Wow, you just solved 2/3 of my stress in life. I had no idea you could just plug it in and it would work. Damn, I've been working too hard.

Being serious, but just messin. . .

Anyway, In my area to be honest, I have found the MTAs to be a bit quicker than the Motos. We use the same 502 model as you have. Could you post the signal levels, please?
