Weak range router a blessing in disguise for security?

If your router has just enough range to cover your house from the inside but not from the outside, is it a blessing in disguise for security since no one can hack it from the outside?

Not much. Those who would like to use or hack your wifi network use higain/directional antenna network adapters that are much more sensitive and powerful than your built in wifi.

Most decent routers have the ability to turn down power settings, but this is more so as to no interfere with other APs.

Actually, your best bet might be to put it on ch 6 and change the SSID to linksys, as well as lowering the power to minimum tolerable. Although if it is really a linksys you will likely need 3rd party firmware to crank down the power.

What about ch 6 and linksys as SSID?

If you live in a fairly urban environment, linksys routers are dominant and the users don't change the defaults. In my neighborhood there are 4 of them, although one is actually using WPA. NICs, unless you play with them a bit, tend to lock on to the loudest signal of those that have the same SSID. So an SSID that stands out is arguably less secure than one that is redundant with the others in the environment when you reduce the power.

Actually the new style black Linksys routers are low powered with internal antenna. I don't know if the style update has anything to do with what you just mentioned.

if you got WPA or WPA2 enablad with strong phrase then you got nothing to worry about irrespective of the signal strength

As I so eloquently stated here...
