1 edit | Windows XP Service Pack 3 Released to Manufacturing
Quote: Today we are happy to announce that Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) has released to manufacturing (RTM). Windows XP SP3 bits are now working their way through our manufacturing channels to be available to OEM and Enterprise customers.
We are also in the final stages of preparing for release to the web (i.e. you!) on April 29th, via Windows Update and the Microsoft Download Center. Online documentation for Windows XP SP3, such as Microsoft Knowledge Base articles and the Microsoft TechNet Windows XP TechCenter, will be updated then. For customers who use Windows XP at home, Windows XP SP3 Automatic Update distribution for users at home will begin in early summer.
Thanks to everyone here who installed the public betas you not only gave us detailed feedback but also helped each other out with timely troubleshooting. Through the beta program we found several important issues and were able to confirm some essential fixes. We couldnt have done this without you.
We will still be monitoring this forum during the next few weeks in case you have more feedback about the release of Windows XP SP3.
On behalf of myself, Shashank Bansal and Windows Serviceability, many thanks.

| reply to NICK ADSL UK The last refresh Beta RC was rock solid for me, I can't wait for the RTM. It was my understanding that it would be available for download for TechNet and MSDN subscribers today, but apparently not? Does anyone know which build they settled on? Has anyone seen the RTM in the wild anywyere? |

| reply to NICK ADSL UK Thanks for the info Nick!
I still don't understand what the big hooha is over this if you have SP2 and have been keeping up with updates of your choosing. It doesn't give any new features to speak of. I'd rather NOT have SP3 install updates I didn't want, which, unless I'm misunderstanding, will happen. |

If you are OEM this is great so there is will be no need to donwload tons of updates. |

I did a clean install of XP SP2 about a week ago and there were over 100 updates in 3-4 cycles. -- Rule #62: Don't take yourself so damn seriously! |

I just did one last week and there were indeed over 100 updates, requiring at LEAST SIX restarts. It wasn't pretty. OTOH, I did another one the same day, and immediately applied SP3 RC Refresh 2, and there was only a couple of TINY updates. Machine #2 ran smooth as silk. Machine #1 (identical specs, too) was slower, and ran "iffy", even after all the updates and time spent. |

You can do this by Slipstreaming the SP into your legit XP install CD. While this page is about SP2, the procedure is identical. »www.winsupersite.com/showcase/wi···ream.asp |
