Re: Bye bye Comcast

said by imrf See Profile :

AT&T offers a faster tier of internet service than Comcast does. AT&T offers a 10Mbps/1Mbps tier, Comcast doesn't. PowerBoost isn't even close to the same thing. Also, all of AT&T's U-Verse tiers are 1Mbps up, something that Comcast doesn't believe in.

I do agree with you on the 1 HD stream, that does suck. One of the reasons why I don't have the service myself. As for the quality of the HD, I've seen it in action and compared it to Comcast at one house and WOW at another, and it looked the same or extremely similar at both locations.
I guess comcast doesnt offer 16/2? Oh wait.. they do.

Its just a shame to come out with something everyone has been waiting for and have it already be a waste and struggeling to catch up.
We get win backs every day. Average time they have had U-Verse? Usually a week.

I argued with one of our subs the other day as I was with my tech installing a 5th HD box. He brought up U-Verse. I told him what I thought. That they are already BEHIND in the game when everyone else is busy one upping each other, U-Verse is stuck trying to keep up with technology from 5 years ago.
He stated his neighbor got it and liked it. I stated the HD limitation since its what we were there for. He stated "My Neighbor got 3 HD DVRs installed with is package!" to which I stated thats great.. but you can only enjoy one HD stream at a time. He didnt believe me. He kept saying "But he has 3 HD DVRS!!!" I stated "You have FIVE.. and you can watch them all at once, while surfing at full speed and talking on the phone. Not one service affects another."

He just didnt get it. He will be another week long U-Verse customer.

I'm sure the same thing happens for RCN, WOW, AT&T and so on.

I stated "You have FIVE.. and you can watch them all at once, while surfing at full speed and talking on the phone. Not one service affects another."
Same with U-Verse. None of the service overlap. I don't even know why you brought that up.

He will be another week long U-Verse customer.
Maybe, maybe not.

The entire Chicago Region has 16/2. No Verizon in site.
I brought up the use of all service at once because U-Verse limits what you can view in regards to HD. If one has nothing to do with the other then I should be watching HD on 5 sets if I want to.

For a new product, newish technology being launched to compete in a "new" market, U-Verse is wildly unpolished.
Im not bashing competition. Im bashing an unfinished product.
If Verizon launched I wouldnt be saying a peep.

Good for Chicago, the OP is in Michigan, which doesn't have 16/2 in it's sight.

And that still makes no sense. Having 3 services has nothing to do with why only 1 HD stream is allowed. Everything has an allocated bandwidth allotment. They have the capability of doing more than 1 HD stream now, but from what I understand is it's a software issue on their gear. They have demoed 3 HDs and 2 SD on the current setup, and they could do more potentially with pair bonding. But lets face it, very few have more than 1 HD set and very few record more than 2 shows at once. I'm not using that as an excuse or anything like that.

Im bashing an unfinished product.
So do you bash Comcast's unfinished products? Face it, there is no tv or sat provider that has a "finished" product. They are all works in progress. Apparently not a whole lot are concerned about only 1 HD stream, since AT&T is installing a ton of people per week, regardless of your claimed win-back numbers.

Remember, they are always right, and you are always wrong. Then again, they do not know when to stop when the Tech holding the equipment can walk out with all of it, and stop the job.

Also, due to the use of interleaving, the pings on Uverse are at a minimum around 60ms to servers that are close to the user. Forget trying to get good pings to the other coast.

Obviously you don't know what you're talking about. Go look at the traces from people who actually have the service. It's actually a third of what you claim.

Sorry to hear about Michigans speed issue. It still doesnt change U-Verses lacking speeds across the board. Comcast is launching 16/2 cross country, FIOS or not ( I hate people talking about something they know nothing about ) Trialing 50/5 and Verizon is offering AMAZING tiers... and U-Verse puts their foot in the door lack lusterly.

Your a big AT&T fan. Thats GREAT! God Bless. Dont get up my ass about it?
AT&T BURSTS ONTO THE SCENE with 10/1.5. If that impresses you, thats great. The fact that its still distance limited is also comical.

I didnt say U-Verse wasnt installing people left and right. Most providers are. With new residents, churn, win backs, everyone is installing each day. I see the winbacks because of the possibility for a botched install post U-Verse affect the plant. We have to keep track of them.

I just think for a provider to come into todays market with limited streams, SD and HD, slower speeds and still the same limitations theyve always dealt with is an odd move.
Verizon did it right. AT&T did it half ass and are working to get up to par AFTER their launch. In my eyes its as limiting as Dish is. Im sure it fits a certain market. Competition is great. Weak competition is even greater.

I'm unfortunately stuck with Comcast until I can get my HOA to agree to let me put up a dish for D*. If uverse was available, I would definitely give it a try. I've never had a single issue with AT&T dsl while Comcast speeds and latency are always jumping around. AT&T dsl is also much cheaper.

Cheaper, more stable and reliable, no hidden caps, hmm sounds like a no brainer. Seven plus years and no issues. I could care less about speed. I want low latency, nearly 100% uptime, and cheap.

Cabletool, wasn't it you that said Comcast is not doing 3:1 in the Chicago land area? Why are we seeing it here in Schaumburg? I can confirm it and numerous others here have. Its pathetic.

Again, wrong. If you can get U-Verse, you can get all the speed tiers that they offer.

I'm sure they did tons of survey to see how many tvs people have and watch at the same time and figured what they could offer at launch was acceptable, and clearly it is. Certainly not to the techie, but to their target customer, the average joe.

So what? That's PowerBoost, which is a joke. It only covers the first 20MB of a file, and fools everyone doing speed tests.

Actually I know people in CT that have Uverse and their pings are close to 60ms. If you aren't right next to the VRAD, things can get pretty hairy with the pings.

I know people that have the sevice and seen the pings, pings to the gateway are always at 20-22ms. 60ms to the gateway is not common, nor is it normal. Again, go look at the U-Verse forum for confirmation. Distance has nothing to do with ping times. There is no distance limitation with U-Verse, I don't know where you're pulling that one from.

ATT Hater

@comcast.net

Typing ADSL2 into Google image search gives me a bunch of graphs like this which gives me the idea there is a distance limitation unless ATT will stream you 1 SD channel and 256Kbps internet if your 2 miles from the VRAD.

Read up on how AT&T has deployed their network then you might understand how distance won't effect U-Verse.

Haha. Thats a little dramatic?
Which part was better? The part where IMRF thinks Comcast only offers 8/768 and doesnt believe in 1mb up. Even though they are currently rolling out 2mb up across the country?

The part where IMRF thinks that 16/2 is ONLY Offered in Fios areas.. which it most certainly is not.

Or the part where IMRF agreed that the HD limitations are ridiculous?

And then has the nerve to back up their decision by stating they most likely did a survey and found out people rarely have more then one HD set and wouldnt NEED more then one stream possible.. although they are working feverishly on allowing more.. for some unknown reason. Because there OBVIOUSLY isnt a demand for it...
Well, people rarley use more then 1mb up or down in daily surfing... but that doesnt stop people from masturbating to FIOS?

Really TopDog.. thats silly.

And, what really gets me, is the number of people that go into a CATV provider forum, and Troll about Satellite, or the competition to impress others.
Could be worse, could get the trolls that bash something they don't know anything about.

Try and call me a troll all you want, I have WOW cable, but I can't stand ignorance, and seeing some of the dumb comments posted in this thread just shows how ignorant some are to other choices.
Like someone saying Comcast doesnt believe in any higher tiers and that AT&T is faster then Comcast?
»Discuss 16/2 or 12/2 speed tiers here, please
»DOCSIS 3.0 "wideband" Service starting with Twin Cities
»Comcast Offers 50Mbps

Tallyho....

Again, Im all for competition. I dont bash just to bash because Im a Shill or Fan Boy. I am a fan of the industry. This includes FIOS and now U-Verse. Fios is great, needs some work on their VOD offerings and a few other Video limitations, U-Verse needs work in every aspect of their offerings.
Thats my bottomline.

Well its all really a moot point when comcast doesnt offer it in our area. But how much do you want to bet that we will see it soon? Because of competition or normal upgrades? Who knows and who cares, all I have to say is we don't have it now.

How many HD streams do you realistically watch? I'm sure you will inflate the number and say everyone in your house needs a 3 HD shows on all the time, but when push comes to shove how many HD streams do you think the average person watches? I can say right now, I may use a HD stream 1/8 of the time, am I an anomaly? Maybe

CableTool, I love your clear and non-bias issues you bring to the table.

1 HD stream at a time would be a dealbreaker for me. There are many times where we are recording 2 shows at once, and even then still have conflicts at times with a 3rd show we want to record. On top of that, I haven't heard good things about the HD quality. I'm sure it will be a lot more attractive when they remedy these things, but then again it's not even an option here so the point is really moot.
