Bundle stand alone dsl with dish network?

Hello,

I'm thinking of staying with embarq by switching over to stand alone dsl, probably 1.5, and getting dish network. I currently have the phone bundle with 1.5 and the speed is acceptable for my needs. Has anyone bundled these? Is it possible to have a satellite service with only a stand alone dsl line? Will a DVR HD with an ethernet port to the router over BB work? Do you know of any current promotions not on embarq or dish's' respective websites? Or just chime in with your observations on dish network service.

Thank you,

MoJoWales

IMHO - if you are remotely interested in HDTV you should be looking at a DirecTV option. They have a much better lineup of HD. Also, to my knowledge all of the receivers require a landline and cannot use ethernet. With that said, I have heard of people getting the receivers to work through vonage & other VOIP's.

However if you are going to go with Dish, you won't receive any discounts by going w/Embarq so there would be no need to even order from them. You could go directly to dish's website or an authorized reseller and setup a normal appt.

direct has higher compression and lower resolution than dish, from my experiences comparing them.

Hello mojowales,

I found out that you can get standalone dish service without a phone line, but you would pay an additional $5 per month. Also, you would not receive any bundle discounts since you wouldn’t have a phone line to tie it together. You can contact dish for the service or our customer service team can set up the standalone dish service. Unfortunately, you cannot use the Ethernet port with the receiver and dsl modem. The other option is to have the phone service included at the lowest level to get the bundle discounts. I hope this information helps. Please, let me know if you need any additional information. Thank you for using Embarq, your complete communications solution.

Not quite Lamont, you're close. It is true that having the Dish receivers connected to an active phone line does waive the $5 programming access fee that they are normally charged. Unfortunately though, in order for a customer to receive the $5 bundle credit from Embarq, they need to fit into two criteria:

1. Subscribe to a home phone package, the most basic of which would be any of the $29.95 Basic Home Phone plans, which would also in turn require a long distance plan of some type (10cents/min no MRC is the lowest cost option). This is similar to how a customer only receives the $10 discount on HSI when they have a phone bundle as well. A customer cannot have just a simple POTS/access line and get this discount.

2. The customer must also have the Dish Network America's Top 200 channel package or higher.

A popular plan, and what I personally have, is this:

-Basic Home Phone with Voicemail $29.95
-Unlimited Long Distance $15.00
-3.0M/640k DSL $29.95
-Dish Network 200 with DVR Advantage on 4 rooms. $49.99 after $5 bundle discount.

My base price monthly is $124.89 before taxes and discounts. Taxes and regulatory fees/surcharges in my area on this plan look like about $13 a month. Not bad considering the price simply does not change. I was paying almost twice that with Brighthouse a couple of years ago and for my money I'm much more satisfied with my current service.

While you'll find a lot of cable companies offer rates like this and lower, most of the time that price goes sky high after 6 months to a year of service.

One thing to consider is right now Dish will let their direct subscribers sign up for Cinemax for $0.01/year if you have credit card autopay and paperless billing. (ATT and Embarq subs are not eligible as billing is handled by the phone companies in those cases) To qualify you just need to have not had Cinemax for the last 3 months, so decline the free 3-months of Cinemax when you sign up. After that just call Dish and say you want the Cinemax for a penny deal and they will hook you up.

The 622 and 722 receivers will both support using the Ethernet connection in place of a phone line. The other nice thing about the 622 and 722 is that the over the air tuner is a 3rd tuner in the box, so it's possible to record 3 programs at the same time on the DVR if you have antenna HD coverage.

While Lets Golf See Profile is correct DirecTV has more HD channels than Dish, the difference isn't quite as stark as it would seem.

"HD" Channels that DirecTV has that Dish does not, but have never aired a single program in HD:
CMT HD
MTV HD
TDIS HD
Toon HD
VH1 HD
Fuel TV HD

Other channels that DirecTV has that Dish does not (yet - Dish is still actively adding channels):
Bravo HD (mixed SD / HD)
Biography HD (mixed SD / HD)
Dis1 HD (mixed SD / HD)
FX HD (mixed SD / HD)
MGM HD
Nick HD (mixed SD / HD)
The 101 HD
Smithsonian HD
Spike HD (mixed SD / HD)

CNBC HD (mixed SD / HD)
FOX Business HD
Weather channel HD (mixed SD / HD)

Cinemax, HBO, and Showtime West feeds (D* carries E&W, Dish only carries E)
Movie Channel HD
SHO Too HD
Starz Comedy HD
Starz Edge HD
Starz Kids and Family HD

CSTV HD (mixed SD / HD)
ESN HD (mixed SD / HD)
Speed Channel HD (mixed SD / HD)
Tennis HD (mixed SD / HD)

Channels Dish has that DirecTV does not are the Voom channels, which are 100% HD 24x7.

Voom channels on Dish:
Animania HD
Equator HD
Gallery HD
Game Play HD
Rave HD
Treasure HD
Ultra HD
HD News
Family Room HD
Film Fest HD
Kung Fu HD
Monsters HD
World Cinema HD
Rush HD
Worldsport HD

Other than those difference, the lineups are identical for the other big channels (Discovery, ESPN, NFL Network, NHL Network, NBA Network, regional sports, HDNet, Nat Geo, Universal, SciFi, USA, etc)

Also, check out DishStore if you are going to be going with Dish. They tend to have one of the better sign-up offerings: »www.dishpro.net/promotional_details.jsp

I wanted to correct an error in the information that Syncognition provided.

You CAN have a basic POTs line and still get the $5 bundle discount per month on the Dish service as long as you have HSI service and the Dish Network America's Top 200 channel package or higher.

EMBARQ Voice Packages or Services Qualifying for the $5 discount per month

Basic Home Phone I, Basic Home Phone, and Basic Home Phone with Voicemail
Special Plan and Special Plan Plus
Standard Home Phone I
Premium Home Phone I
HSI (12-month term commitment)
